Stocks trimmed or erased early gains in a choppy trading session Thursday to post a mixed finish.

Stocks lost ground after a news report said that an experimental treatment for COVID-19 delivered disappointing results in a trial. The maker of the treatment, Gilead Sciences Inc.

subsequently said the trial results for remdesivir were"inconclusive." The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.16% rose around 39 points, or 0.2%, to end near 23,515, according to preliminary figures, while the S&P 500 SPX, -0.05% lost around 1.5 points, or 0.1%, to end near 2,798. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.00% fell less than 0.1% to end near 8,495. Gilead Sciences shares fell 4.3%.
