While the move is well-timed to take advantage of Twitch's surging use, it likely would have happened eventually either way, given the platform's broadening ambitions.

Broadening its content improves the platform's appeal to advertisers, with Twitch able to simultaneously gain additional insight into its core user base and also expand its audience. Twitch's main demographic is young, male, and tech-savvy — a group that is often difficult to reach through traditional channels. in the platform, especially as it has slowly begun to branch out into adjacent categories like "anime, vlogging, comedy, and the creative arts.

Additionally, Twitch is also looking to widen its user base beyond young men and avid gamers — it aims to attract "anyone between 18 and 24 interested in general entertainment," with its new shows, according to Bloomberg. But even as it expands, the platform won't lose its gaming edge — Twitch plans to introduce interactive, game-like elements into otherwise standard shows, allowing for an interesting new experience for a general audience while remaining true to its gaming roots.
