Astro Teller, Alphabet's 'captain' of moonshot ideas, reflected on a decade of ambitious projects in a virtual commencement speech: 'What bothers me is that X shouldn't be the only moonshot division'

Astro Teller, the head of Alphabet's X division, has called on the class of 2020 to build more moonshot factories to nurture ambitious ideas.

In his speech, Teller acknowledged the strange world environment that this year's graduates will be entering, but called on them to use the unusual conditions to their advantage in order to build bigger ideas. He also gave a rare glimmer of insight into Google's moonshot thinking. Teller said that for as long as he could remember, he wanted to build "an invention machine," referring to Google's long-running moonshot division. "Not an actual physical machine, but a place where groups of passionate, talented people can throw themselves unleashed and unfiltered at the problems they care about most and emerge with radical solutions that are 10 times better than anything that's been possible before.

X Development, which was formerly known as Google X and spun off into its own entity under Alphabet in 2015, has been the birthplace for a handful of notable Google ventures including its life sciences division Verily and self-driving company Waymo –But Teller called on graduates to shun "the strong gravitational pull" towards conventional ways of thinking.
