Australian businesses are being pushed by the federal government and industry leaders to diversify away from China.

Senator Birmingham said that there was no evidence of a rumoured list of Australian exports in danger from further Chinese government trade strikes., made on the basis of comments from Chinese sources, cited a hit list including wine, seafood, oatmeal, fruit and dairy. But the story did not identify which Chinese government department would have drawn up a list or when it would have been compiled.

Lavina Lee, senior lecturer in the Department of Modern History, Politics and International Relations at Macquarie University, will on Thursday urge Australia, Japan, India and the United States to establish their own infrastructure funding scheme to rival China’s Belt and Road Initiative. In a paper for the Lowy Institute, Dr Lee will argue the four countries which make up the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue need to enhance military co-operation to counter and deter growing Chinese influence in the region.Even though all four countries are still dealing with the coronavirus crisis, Dr Lee will argue Beijing has quickly resumed its coercive behaviour towards Taiwan and rival claimant states in the South China Sea.

The initiative, which is Chinese President Xi Jinping's signature program to bankroll infrastructure around the world, has faced criticism for creating "debt traps" for developing nations.for suggesting Australia had vilified China by pursuing an independent coronavirus inquiry, triggering the tariffs on Australian producers.Get our Coronavirus Update newsletter for the day's crucial developments at a glance, the numbers you need to know and what our readers are saying.

Sell to the USA biggest economy in the world

Especially as government lead them into the China trap, do they take responsibilty for anything

Good be bold and time to move on!

Glady to see this approach happen quickly.

Who else wants to buy?

Yes, elsewhere?Where can you find a market like China who can also pay on time? Easily said than done. Cost of poor diplomacy?

Great. Will that mean I don't have to buy organic oats from Finland? And we'll have better quality fruit in supermarkets? And I'll be able to buy barley malt (delicious in milk drinks and cakes) and even perhaps be able to afford the occasional piece of fresh seafood.

Australia has been provoking China in many ways and follow US and UK. Stopping HUAWEI equipment purchases with no evidence. Posturing in South China sea with US Navy. Politicians openly criticizing China. Australia need to wake up foster neutrality. Our economy will suffer now.

BuyAussie !

Yeah let's sell to our Overlord the Americans. Woooops, they have we too much of it, in fact they're ordering more ships to sell theirs to China, now China no longer wants our.

Isn’t his job to facilitate that shift in markets?

Start with Taiwan free trade deal!

Makes good sense to me, it's called 'global' trading, not just China trading, we have much to offer the world markets, our reputation is high. Did we really get manipulated by big business/politicians to trade this way ? Someone's got their hands in the till.

Anyone want to buy $1.5 billion dollars of barley? C'mon, there must be some takers.

This is joke. Can we export argruculture production to US? Can we get international study from US ? Can US sent student to Australian for English class! We are helping American first , we are helping us to again China , even our farmer broken? Even our university broken?

Yeap Go elsewhere to realize how important is China market. If Aust is so looking up upon US, perhaps ask the big brother to support buy all Australian stuff to boycott China. You don’t need China don’t you? No China money & make Australia proud again! But how proud can u be?

I agree why do we need to sell to China when there all thoses others country need it to

YES PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE .... India? Anywhere please!!! economy

Dumb leaders. No strategy just obvious media grabs. More energy spent on strategising over sports grants than building a productive economy

And forget the government supporting you. Good luck!

The Chinese Communist Party has pissed off the entire planet. They can only get away with their shit by keeping other countries divided. And that is failing.

I have witnessed nothing more ridiculous than Birmingham on News Breakfast this week declaring that India could be an alternative market for Australian wine. Hindus and Muslims don’t consume alcohol and represent over 950 million Indians

yes, I wrote to Simon Birmingham a couple of weeks ago with the same recommendation. India are more in line with our ideals, and some African countries are desperately in need of food, being in drought.

Glad if we can sell elsewhere where big market as China. But if no, please respect the relationship between China and us. Put Australian interest first please.

Sell to Dutch Cariben! We would love it!

Chexit. 😬

Get the marketing guy out to try that, he created this mess.

Easier said than done. Bit like a grovelling apology for upsetting our biggest customer for no good reason.

Where and who would buy 600 million worth of barely ? Thailand is a tiny country with already existing barely supply Indonesia is a Muslim country they don’t wanna your barely India Mhmm might be but I’m sure we have our barely supply already so such big volume your hanging

Should have done years ago.

it would take years to find a new market

Is that like New Zealand went beyond the UK after the UK joined the EU. AU gov has a lot to learn and their track record of learning is poor. The lnp much prefer to be told what to do.

Because the Chinese market is lost to Australian barley farmers (to US competitors, just to deepen the humiliation) thanks to Australia’s misplaced sense of global importance. Right wing conservative bubble?

Genius. I'm sure they hadn't thought of that

How were they not doing that as well anyway? Imagine companies relying on a sole customer, albeit their biggest customer, what happens when your landlord/councilor or board of trustees pisses off your most prized customer?

Any sales manager will tell you it’s far easier to keep the customers you have than try to find new ones. This government is incompetent.

The LAST thing we should be doing right now is losing export customers!

😆😂🤣it’s as if they’re selling to China to begin with for a reason, like optimizing profit. Oh wait, y’all were trading with China bc you’re BFF? 😆 how do professionals go on record saying this shit?NO ONE wants to deal with China, we HAVE to. That’s what trading is. Jfc
