fierce horsemen from Central Asia harried the Chinese empire’s flank, often setting the terms of engagement with their giant, settled neighbour to the east. In February an echo rolled out of the past when a horde of whooping riders galloped through the town of At-Bashy in south-central Kyrgyzstan, close to the border with China.
When Banyan was last in Nur-Sultan, the capital of Kazakhstan, a foreign-ministry official explained that in return for copious investment in oilfields, infrastructure and manufacturing, the only explicit demand China makes of his government is for vocal support for China’s territorial integrity . In particular, China’s government wants no objections to its campaign against Muslims in the province of Xinjiang whom it deems “terrorists” out to split the motherland.
Yet still they bubble up. In September several anti-China protests erupted in Kazakhstan, over rumours that dozens of obsolete Chinese factories would be relocated to the country, over accusations of land grabs by Chinese firms, and over China’s repression in Xinjiang, where more than 1m Muslims are detained in camps. A more recent grumble in private conversations is Central Asian regimes’ growing enthusiasm for high-tech surveillance and social-control systems, which China is keen to supply.
Wow
But who'll supply the needed investment? UN can, if there's a will. Singapore's PM suggests all nations should comply with UN rules for global finance - however finance industry, US and China don't want such independent checks.
Feel jealous about China? Build up your own economic capacity! One nation doesn't need to share border with China in order to have close economic relations with China.
boycott China
Alarm to the world. Don't be dependent on china
another bad article from the Economist. At the start, the article has a racist connotation...Turkmenistan had to be horse riders and the Chinese were subject to their past aggression. Now, business disagreement is not based on reality but 'rooted' in past fears? trashfromEcon
Well, i think the more important perspective is that they don’t know how to talk about China in front of you. Caught between adversarial powers
So every move of them makes you unhappy.
I forgot Turkmenistan existed. I’m a bad American.
Guess we learned why Kyrgyzstan look for Moscow and the EUEA
No need to talk about, as long as they pay.
Bc Chinese is knot Asian ?
Really they don't know...😎😎
So just like Canada.
Right. We all know how the characters ended on 'the cow is to blame' story. BlackLivesMatter 6thjune
The world could do without CCP China, think 40 years ago before China opened up. The world will be a better place without China, the CCP with economic power would seek to corrupt, suppress, manipulate and bully, to change the current world order for its own benefit.
Doesn't mean it will bring you wealth though. More often a source of mischief and loss of ownership.
Isn't central Asia usually considered as Russia's backyard?
All the negative news of globalisation ... so much suspicions ... everyone loses.
Just as Central American countries do not know how to talk about USA. USA is the source of some prosperity but also the cause of their poverty and political turmoil.
Virtue signalling phase
