Businesses reliant on local and international tourists have been in hibernation for months but Australian Tourism Industry Council managing director Simon Westaway said there would not be any "real recovery" for the sector before the end of the year.
"If [the] industry has the confidence to keep staff and invest in a return to sustainability by Christmas, we could see [JobKeeper] start to phase out during the early part of 2021, pending the international border," Mr Westaway said."Given the slow, and in many parts of Australia still non-existent, recovery in tourism activity, JobKeeper for enterprises right across the tourism sector needs to be extended beyond September.
Seasonal businesses had been unable to use the scheme fully, the submission said, asking for special consideration to be given to those whose regular seasonal workforce usually started after March 1 or whose season lasted less than a year. It also requested help for start-up businesses that had been operating for less than 12 months and self-employed working directors.
The virus flies in. As soon as we open the border, we are dead.
And then the government will be broke!
“Visa and seasonal workers”? Have they not heard about the 2 million unemployed and underemployed locals?
