HBO Max has temporarily removed 'Gone with the Wind' from its library, citing the 1939 film's 'racist depictions.' 'We felt that to keep this title up without an explanation and a denouncement of those depictions would be irresponsible,' HBO said.

. The movie has been temporarily removed from the HBO Max streaming service.Streaming service HBO Max has temporarily removed the 1939 classic filmis a product of its time and depicts some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that have, unfortunately, been commonplace in American society," an HBO Max spokesperson said in a statement.

"These racist depictions were wrong then and are wrong today, and we felt that to keep this title up without an explanation and a denouncement of those depictions would be irresponsible." The spokesperson adds that the movie will return to the streaming service at an undetermined time, with a discussion of its historical context. But the movie itself will remain untouched"because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed.

But the movie — with its glorification of the antebellum South and its glossing over the horrors of slavery —Critics say it looks back at the Confederacy with a certain nostalgia and fondness. As the recent protests sparked by the police killing of George Floyd have continued across the country these criticisms over the movie have been renewed. Screenwriter, producer, and director John Ridley posted an op-ed in the"The movie had the very best talents in Hollywood at that time working together to sentimentalize a history that never was," Ridley wrote.

Are they morons or pretend to be morons? So it turns out that films about Abraham Lincoln are also racist? This film described the US Civil War!!!!!

Well, let's ban the PoliceAcademy movies as well! Think SteveGuttenberg and BubbaSmith would approve? censorship protests2020

When I watch this movie I KNOW it’s a flawed, deeply racist perspective of the Confederacy and slavery. I also know it’s about an incredibly vain, selfish woman.

So when is Django getting banned? The entire movie shows racism lol

Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn.

HBO, this is stupid.

SO MANY OTHER MOVIES AND TV SHOWS THAT ARE ABOUT THE SAME

GOOD, SOME CENSORSHIP IS A GOOD THING! We have to live a more disciplined life or the trump train will reign. Self control vs being brainwashed.

There will never be anything that meets the bar for history if all references and depictions of what was reality at the time is erased. Living in a fantasy world is making sheep out of the people, but that's what you want. Mindless followers.

DUMB 👎👎 Can't erase History (Good or Bad)

STOP 🛑 MOVIE is entertainment! Problem is ppl are STUPID;1 got PROBLEMS learning about race relations from as FICTIONAL FANTASY MOVIE!2)Ppl got too much time to think!”Please all please none”Cancel I Love Lucy,Katherine Hepburn wore black face for film..Shall I continue? NEXT..

Reactionary mistake

When Hattie McDonald won the Academy Award, she had to sit segregated away from the other actors. That was an abomination.

Maybe it’s time for a new full story of Gone With The Wind.

🙄

Good now do Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Well now, that will fix the world's ills.

The rift is wider and wider.

It's ironic conservatives have tried to argue the civil war was not fought over slavery, when a literal quote from Gone With the Wind, which they're currently defending, is '... I'd have freed them all when father died, if the war hadn't already freed them.'

It’s just a damn movie. Why censor it? What are they afraid of? Why not let people decide wether they wanna see it or notand think whatever they wanna think of it?

In both the book and movie, it never felt that it was glorifying slavery. The attitude toward the slaves was accurately depicted by how the white characters spoke to the slaves. But, also depicted the strange familiar relationship these people had with each other as individuals.

Good thing I have it recorded

I don't get this--don't the Karens think this movie is fine? Or do they think that the slaves were coddled?

Idiotic

HBO was gutless and you self-righteously support their censorship of an 80 year old book and movie. You don’t trust us to make up our own minds. Here’s the big joke. You received public money to support censorship of what we see. DEFUND NPR.

Ur kidding. I think i will watch something that glorifies The South

Since when is HBO Weeny?

They are just going too far

going to far controlling film and art!

Today is Hattie McDaniel’s birthday. She won an Oscar for best supporting actress for her role in Gone With The Wind. Along with Butterfly McQueen, she was unable attend the “whites-only” premier of the movie. She was the first black person to win an academy award.TheMoreYouKnow

So...what about Roots? Remove that too?

Glad I bought the movie 12 years ago on iTunes. I grew up watching this when I was a kid. Future generations need more education not censorship and political correctness. We need future generations to be tough like the generations of the 1920s and 30s

And that's why I've never watched it. The snippets I have seen over the years have always been offensive.

When do we start burning the books? Asking for a friend.

While NPR and the mainstream media romanticize the protestors and gloss over the horrors of the rioters and looters.

hmm..cannot understand this part

So when will 'Harriet' be removed? Asking for a friend... eraseinghistory FakeOutrage Triggered statueslivesmatter HistoryMatters

It’s Already 1 On Amazon DVD 📀!👍😏

Okay, not overly fond of GWtW, but we need to educate people about understanding art within the context of its creation. The book written in ‘35, the movie in ‘39. (Not the most enlightened era) is a romance set in the Civil War which ended in 1865. Slavery was not the focus.

I saw the movie in the 60’s and hated it. It’s just one long tragic scene after another. I’ve never watched it a second time. Also, HBO Max? Not interested.

This is just ridiculous and dangerous. This country is hopefully reaching peak looniness. No good will come of this.

While it glosses over the horrors of slavery, it is a misinterpretation to see it as a romanticization of the confederacy. It's a tale of the need to find existential meaning & identity when a world collapses & becomes meaningless despite futilistic endeavors.

Stalin is smiling in his grave.

Wow! This movement is really something.

Gotta hand it to their PR folks... temporary wokeness = best free publicity ever for unpopular streaming service.

Too all those who think NPR speaks truth! I think they like most main stream media are full of hate among other things. Yes according to them protests are ok with Covid-19. Trump rallies will spread the virus though! Pathetic

This is stupid. We are moving towards extreme censorship. History is ugly. Let’s keep it that way. Teach & show the igliness of the past.

getting sicker and sicker.

Trump poisons everything.

Its fiction and we know it. If you do not like it, do not watch! Dont read the book! But banning it because it was made in another time is wring.

Let’s keep that energy!!

There are so many good movies that don't get into the rotation. Let's bring some of those out to fill in the blank.

No one said it better than Scarlet. 'Tomorrow is another day.'

'Gone in 60 Seconds'.... now thats a classic!

How about removing every John Wayne cowboy movie? The one where the white cowboy saves everyone from the native Americans. Horrible

This is so dumb. It's a MOVIE for God's sake! Are the American people so dumb they don't know the difference between movies and real life?

HBO MAX; how can we get some free publicity out of all this?

I don’t think very many people take HBO max anyway! But this is so fucking stupid on so many levels! Totally uninformed as to the movies content and meaning!

Sadly, GWTW is an amazing movie, with a lot of historical and cultural problems. Ex: Mammie is a great character; Big George is a tragedy of caricature.

Let me be clear. 85% of all African slaves were taken by Muslims via the Arab slave trade. Of the renaining 15%, less than 5% (1%) went to British American colonies. No reason to feel so guilty bro!

Anyone who says this is rewriting history doesn’t realize that it’s lost cause/Jim crow propaganda. It’s historically inaccurate. It’s rose tinted glasses on steroids.

My mom was from the south. She took us kids to see the movie to show how the south used to be and she actually believed it. She never had a malice bone in her body but it shows how ingrained the LostCause was for her generation. It must change for my kids. BlackLivesMatter

Book burning will be next

So it’s a period piece about romance , love, betrayal and redemption with the backdrop of the civil war to move the plot. The caricature representation of slavery actually helps explain how we got to today.

Jesús Christ...we Americans always have to go to the extremes?

America's great leap forward must have its share of book burning, and cultural destruction. Sad to see this evil taking place in the U.S.

Good lord

Free Newton's pair

so fucking what! jst let that shit go and stop spreading the hate

I’m sure it will be back. It’s an important reminder of our deeply racists past, both at the time of the movie and the time in which it was set. It’s an important cultural touch point.

Oh my god.

It is history. How does removing history accomplish anything. Let's all pretend . . .

Oh yeah that’s a big help to racism👌👌

Shame, as a child during this time, I was honored to have seen this movie, now. I think you have to see that because there were actors and actresses, their acting was the most of the movie, not really the story, to a child. Thanks to the people in this film and the films after.

These are the same types of people who want to edit Mark Twain. PC police are everywhere, even to the point of erasing the cultural and artistic history of this country. It's fine to discuss issues presented in these films, but to abolish? What's next?

It's a movie, dummies, not real life.

Yeah. Because if you aren’t aware of history...it won’t repeat itself 🙄

Explanation- the past is like the present only much worse the further back you go.

well im gonna cancel HBO this is absurd

Digital form burning is not the answer!

First, I don’t care and I don’t think it impacts anything one way or another. I wasn’t clamoring to watch it anyway. Second, in the age of the internet, those that have a hard on for this film can still watch it. HBO Max isn’t the only source. It’s not like the film is deleted

Good.

Hattie McDaniel (6/10/1893-10/26/1952)was an American actress,singer-songwriter,and comedian. She is best known for her role as”Mammy'in Gone with the Wind(1939),for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, becoming the first African American to win an Oscar.

Why not just have a good ole book burning while we’re at it? Censorship is not the answer.

Fuck censorship of speech, of the press, of the arts. It’s our job to remember the past. We SHOULD have examples of how the races have been portrayed over the decades in film, etc. Look at the old Disney cartoons and movies- blatant racist depictions. The proof should STAY

I guess one could say the film has temporarily gone with the wind?

one of greatest movie ever !!!

How long before the James Bond series is pulled for being sexists & degrading toward women or Lawrence of Arabia for the historical portrayal of Arabs? It's like 'Thank You For Smoking' with WH Macey trying to edit cigarettes out of old movies with carrots & celery.

If they start including other ethnic minorities, including Native Americans. They are going to have to start pulling a lot of old movies. And TCM is going to have to shut down! 🙄 Can we get some perspective here?

This idea is rediculous, irresponsible and represents a great reason to cancel HBO sub! Now networks deem to have the superior perspective to prescribe what viewer can or can not watch

WTH!! its a movie about an era in which this existed so ridiculous

Oh No I'm changing! This is a bad day of mourning? Remembering the movie Pretty Wemon?

Does anyone even watch this puddle of crap anymore?

what next? pasting will smith's head over clark gable's? this is beginning to get out of hand, are we to pretend slavery didn't happen during the civil war and racist depictions didn't happen in film and literature?

Hattie McDaniel was the first African American woman to win an Academy Award for this movie when she won best supporting actress.

Well, Disney decided to put up warnings to allow people to choose to watch problematic older content rather than deny their history. We can't throw away history because it ain't pretty. Do better, HBO.

Translation, you whites need to watch a re-education film before you can view this. Right out of the North Korean play book.

Everyone arguing that GWTW is anti-slavery needs to reread the opening scroll that tells you exactly what the movie is: a paean to the Lost Cause, presented against soft, romanticized images of slaves at work & sweet, mournful background music.

Margaret Mitchell, who wrote the novel, was not a racist.

We need to FIGHT THE LEFT with any means necessary!

Cowards.

Wow. This is the equivalent of banning a book because of the beliefs of an author. This is the erosion of history and culture.

What a spineless corporate move.

Democrats trying to deny and rewrite history again.

Like anyone is dying to watch a 4 hour movie that you will miss most of because you're dinking around on your phone. Rent it for a couple of bucks off Amazon if you simply must watch Scarlett pine over that useless Ashley Wilkes.

Next all little people will be out protesting the Wizard of Oz...

I've grappled with my own feelings about GWTW for some time. It's a glorious piece of filmmaking. McDaniel & Leigh fully deserved their Oscars. Gable is iconic. The score is magnificent. And it is racist. It was instrumental in glorifying the CSA. HBO is doing the right thing.

This would be akin to a library banning history books because of depictions of slavery in the past. Fucking commies!

Sigh

We are living in truly dangerous and frightening times.

It actually shows what white privileged is but in an undercover way . That wakes people up about this not changing. It also seems taking down all stereo types of racism in movies would get rid of a lot of movies .

Pathetic.

You left out they pulled it on Hattie Mae's birthday the first black woman to win an Oscar

We solved racism! Yay!

Remember when the music video channels did “pop-up videos” and annotated entire videos with explanations? Would be awesome if someone did that to movies like this. Turn all the problem movies into an educational tool then nobody can scream about their “right” to watch the movie.

Shouldn’t that warning be shown at the end of every movie before they credit the actors and film workers? 😏🧐

Shouldn’t that warning be shown at the end before they credit the actors and film workers, too? 😏🧐

I’m sure they’re going to do that with EVERY film that portrays Latinos in a “racist depiction” AND every film that portrays women with “sexist depictions”........ Bullshit HBO AllLivesMatter GWTW hattiemcdaniel

Hide the past! That's going to solve everything! /sarcasm

I do not agree with that action. We can’t erase history. You would need to banish hundreds of films, plays, TV shows from the past. We can’t change the past and can only hope to create a better future by learning from the past.

I think its irresponsible to remove films from the past because of change in opinions over the years. We might as well remove Nosferatu for its antisemitic themes. In order to understand history, we need to understand its viewpoints. You wanna be offended, watch birth of a nation

Now they are loosing it.

absolutely moronic

As it should, but watch all those that get their pants all ruffled lol as they don’t have a clue how brainwashing things can turn out to be.

It says TEMPORARILY for goodness sake! The good thing that come out from the TEMPORARY removal of the movie actually what makes y’all wanna watch this now. So stop fake caring n go download or rent it somewhere. gonewiththewind

Hey HBO and hbomax you are Fascist and we are canceling our subscription!

HBO Max said they are editing out all of the 'racist depictions' and the new 15 minute version will be available soon.

are these white people in America educated? it's like USA gave the disability placard. covid19 coronavirus COVID19Pandemic ICantBreath investigate EndRacismInAmerica

I think this is a bit too far. It’s a movie. It’s meant for entertainment.

But..but ..liberals are open minded..ha ha ..such hypocritical phonies..

Or you could have put a warning/disclaimer at the beginning. Like a rating. That every show already has. But at least we’re finally talking about HBO Max.

HBO and you too , forgot that Hattie McDaniel was subjected to prejudice at every turn. To acknowledge what Hollywood was during that era. She still had to sit at a table in the BACK!

How do you make a movie about the civil war south without showing racism and slavery? By the way, Hattie McDaniel won an academy award, the first AA to do so. A political statement.

And ruined Daniel's part in this amazing movie forever as well.

Good for them. This racist work has been touted as a masterpiece for far too long.

Hitler censored art, music, film and books. Called it degenerate. Said it didn't represent the Nation's ideology or identity. Funny how history repeats itself. Sieg Heil Amerika.

Gone With the Wind glamorizes slavery and Plantation life. It portrays lives that only about 3% of the white confederates lived. Slavery impoverished poor whites who could not compete with free labor. Slavery is evil for black and white and ultimately the Planters who are GWTW!

'Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it'

I struggle w/these types of efforts. GWTW was a period piece that afforded actress Hattie McDaniel an Oscar for Best Supoorting Actress (the 1st Af-Am to receive an Academy Award). In an effort 2do something dont just do anything. Who is present when decisions are being made?

You can still by the book and physical copies of the movie. Chill out

I watched Gone With the Wind for the first time earlier this year and it was one of the most despicably racist things I’ve ever endured. All these people complaining on this thread, have you seen the film?

So, are we going to start banning books, now, too?

Insanity

Silly move by HBO to explain the removal of a shitty old movie, but look at the fools overreacting in the comments lol

You really made a story out of this.

I think censoring our past is not the answer. This movie was intended to show the detrimental impact of racism and what happened to the south during the civil war.

Now do Shirley Temple.

thats dumb and dramatic. You cannot hide the past.. if we forget the past we relive it. Like we are doing now.

Well, I’ll say this overkills.

All of a sudden GWTW became the epitome of Sacred Art for an awful lot of white people. 🙄The slaves are written to be so helpless and incompetent that they BEG TO BE ABLE TO REMAIN SLAVES. And it’s just been pulled “temporarily “ from one service, freeze peach heroes.

It would be really interesting to watch GTW with added ‘pop-up’ explanations showing the imbedded racial stereotyping and inaccurate portrayals.

Are they going to hide Schindler's List from the world too?

Rewriting history, hiding history isn't going to help change the future.

I hope they temporarily, they mean just for an hour

HBO we don’t need a lecture. You’re just a catalogue.

The film glorified slavery and perpetuated lost cause mythos. Makes sense if HBO is done with it.

See this story just fans the culture wars. Why don't you do another story on prison labour, instead? Or, even better, further profiles on Trump's cabinet of vulture kleptocrats, who are still steady crunching carrion?

So many of your readers, ironically, can't read. Its willful ignorance at this point. Its one streaming service not a global ban and it will be returning to hbomax with some historical context.

I have never liked this film for those exact reasons.

So glad o didn’t get an HBOMAXsubscription

HBO is owned by Warner Media LLC. Why don't they just do this:

The SA Brownshirts are back

Watch Hollywood on Netflix

The spokesperson adds that the movie will return to the streaming service at an undetermined time, with a discussion of its historical context. But the movie itself will remain untouched 'because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed.'

Jesus Christ what a weird world we live in

About fucking time.

Blazing saddles over here be like.....

Ah things are really going great now... It’s not frightening at all how quickly this is progressing. What’s next?

There goes an important historical film - one which was always utilized in an educational fashion when I was in school and in college. Shame on HBO Max! God, I wish there was a reset button for this planet to give people like these a sense of logic.

Just ban the flying monkeys from the Wizard of Oz and the world will be right again
