Microsoft asks managers to cancel meetings and events on Juneteenth to give employees a 'day of listening, learning, and engagement'

Microsoft is allowing employees to cancel meetings and use June 19 as "a day of listening, learning, and engagement," according to an email reviewed by Business Insider.CEO Satya Nadella and his direct reports plan to cancel their weekly senior leadership team meeting on Friday and Microsoft managers are encouraged to do the same.

CEO Satya Nadella and his direct reports plan to cancel their weekly senior leadership team meeting on Friday and Microsoft managers are encouraged "to support this day and cancel meetings when they can to create space for all of us to listen, learn and engage on this topic." Microsoft has yet to respond to a request to confirm the contents of the email, but it was confirmed by multiple employees.

"We invite you to join in this moment in a way that is most personal and meaningful to you," Chief Diversity Officer Lindsay-Rae McIntyre wrote in the email. "We can connect to broader social justice conversations happening in many cities and countries around the globe; we can prioritize becoming an effective and informed ally; we can determine how and where we will engage more.

June 19 falls near the end of the company's fiscal year, so Microsoft said leaders in certain regions may need to select an alternate date for this day of reflection. "We want to avoid corporate mandated events, leader led learning sessions, in order to allow each of us to choose individually, and intentionally what has the greatest meaning," McIntyre wrote.

"One consistent request from the community, and a lesson we've learned from the social justice space, is that any action we take should be meaningful, sustainable, and lead to change," McIntyre wrote. "This is a pivotal moment in our conversation on race in the US; however, this is only one moment in the ongoing work we are doing to make Microsoft and our industry more diverse and inclusive.
