The temporary removal of the Oscar-winning drama is renewing a conversation about the film industry’s murky past and its effect on society at large

There is a scene in 1974’s underground blaxploitation-era film The Spook Who Sat by the Door where a group of black militants comically mock the ubiquity of Gone With the Wind-like imagery that is so embedded within American culture. As the others laugh out loud at the performative racism essential to this historical representation, the film’s main character, Freeman, expounds on the larger meaning of such things: “You have just played out the American Dream.

I remember it as sexist, racist and arse- flatteningly long. Nuff said

Here's a link to an astute & erudite commentary on GWTW. ( 2 parts)

In Julius Caesar's books Celtics people are described as savages. In the Scarlet Pimpernel French Republicans depicted as horrible monsters. New viewers/readers of Gone with the wind are clever enough. Another subject is Who We Honor and why with streets naming and statues

Gone with the Wind is actually a novel written by a woman who opposed slavery and supported black Americans.

Heads up on the 'murky past'. Fortunes were made in Britain by the slave traders. What a joke, can you believe these clowns!

I hated this movie.

How are blacks in that period supposed to be portrayted in films? As if they had the same rights as whites? Or no black caracters at all? Speaking of stories with focus other than the cruelties of slavery, or that must be banned as well?

The Guardian’s founder made his fortune in the cotton trade & supported the South in the Civil War & denounced Lincoln for freeing the slaves. boycotttheguardian

I don't agree. Films show the way it was.

Racist but also incredibly important.

Did the black maid in the movie win an Oscar?

Equality/Security/Justice/ Freedom~ Now Gone with the wind

There was a land of Cavaliers and Cotton Fields called the OldSouth In this pretty world Gallantry took its last bow Here was the last ever to be seen of Knights and their Ladies Look for it only in books for it is no more than a dream remembered A Civilization gone with the wind

Power to majority. Who cares of results.

Yankee Carpetbaggers

BRST MOVIE OF ALL TIME!

Johnny Deppt played in a movie with slaves is that going to be banned along with all earning placed into a fund

You misspelled, 'Collectivism and the damaging effects of cancel culture.'

Burn Hollywood burn by Public Enemy. All right fellas let's go hand out Hollywood or would they not Make us all look bad like I know they had But some things I'll never forget yeah So step and fetch this shit For all the years we looked like clowns.

White man speak with forked tongue.

Scarlett O’Hara was depicted as an opportunistic spoilt narcissist. Films and books are evidence of another time, you learn a lot from them if analysed. Statues on the other hand, as a free standing image without context can glorify a mass murdering white supremacist.

Irene Pappas the history of islam does this need to come down as well.. and what else should we add to the list.

Couldn't give a toss. Is it racist? Undoubtedly. Does debating it distract from the structural racism in the here and now? Absolutely.

So many on the left have become racism trivialisers. Taking away the importance of true racism.

Who wrote this crap?

ridiculous, they want to nullify our ability to discern. The next censorship could be 'A christmas carol' to be follow for docens more. Pathetic, like that and by force they are not going to improve any social relationship, they will create more gaps and resentment.

But that was the reality at the time! Many Indian households have servants to this day. Not employees. Servants!!

I am completely against any form of censorship. (Something that sadly in UK is rampant) I would prefer something like the warning for old looney toons cartoons to look at stuff with perspective.

If you start these actions, please remove all movies, books, historical notes and recorded facts, if they are tackling any kind of allusion to slavery.

Has anybody else noticed it’s always the lefties spouting this nonsense? I mean I certainly never thought like this, I mean it took articles like this to even see it from that perspective, so not only did they come up with this they assume everybody else thinks this way. 🤔

The Guardian again pushing the dangerous narrative. Allow censorship to reign and follow in the footsteps of the greatest failed empires. Do you want Britain to stand on the verge of internal strife as America is?

so you just all of a sudden noticed that?

What next? Shall we get rid of books? People we don't like? Let's remember Berlin in 1933 burning 25.000 books considered un-german. Wake up people this is total mind control! Removing books, films etc won't change the past!!

Didn't the film highlight it? Or would they prefer to blotch it all out? In the end, Hattie McDaniel received an OSCAR and won the hearts of many!

A fabulous film

The Guardian has a damaging effect on common sense and rational thinking

Oh for fuck sake...

Oh FFS it was 1939....a different time. Erasing the past is not the answer BUT learning from it & insuring that we as a society change & don’t allow it to happen again is far more important. I feel like I’m falling into a void of sterilisation & total denial of our past

This is one of the most awarded movies ever. It raises awareness about racism, not the opposite. Lets not censor movies & series, which bring awareness against racism, have content & reflecting a period in our history. The Media are making the racist discussion even worse.

Looking forward to removing all the Detective/Police series where the Captain is always a black man shouting at white people.

Once I saw Gone With The Wind and instantly started discriminating. Thank you for not letting me see that dangerous film, wise people

Rewriting history is impossible and always ends in disaster. Much more sensible would be to analyse the why and how, compensate those affected by it and make sure such injustice never occurs again.

The Guardian and the damaging effects of pandering and TDS

Your journalism is a joke, know that the majority of people do not agree with your left wing BS and that your format is a dinosaur with not much long left in the tank.

Looks like her Oscar is gone with the wind

this is a depiction of history presently we have films, TV series and a genre of music in which black people routinely use the word nigger incessantly, presumably that’s fine?

Some more racism aimed at children

I watched this movie and I'm now the biggest racist on my street. How do I stop it?

Protesters - this is who really is the face of a completely lost mind. These are people who do not know their story. They always need to blame someone. Although they themselves are to blame for their stupidity and narrow-mindedness. Savages.

Nazi Germany and the Communists in the Soviet Union also banned art and literature. You have chosen a path that will end in disaster.

Having just binge watched Breaking Bad, I think we should be more uneasy about racial stereotyping and hierarchies portrayed in contemporary moving image.

FFS. Worry about child labour and sweat shops of today.

In the following there are racist and discriminatory depictions of characters. Do not watch.

Anyone ever noticed Prince Charles fingers?

First African American Oscar Gone with the wind.

Catch 22. You’re stopping this racist movie by being seen, but simultaneously diminishing the first black actress to win an Oscar. Her acceptance speech is very moving.

Maoist Morons

We no longer listen to racists like you guys

One of the best movies of all time and Margaret Mitchell was a genius..

Tyranny in action.

Big mistake to judge the past through eyes of the present. Not a single civilisation or human grouping stands up in that scrutiny. In my view it would be more helpful to judge the present with the eyes of the future.

I knew at 11 years old that this was fiction and not real, do all leftists want to think for everyone else?

Hollywood has been a propaganda tool for the USA and has benefited of the help of US army and air force since the 1940s

I thought it was alright for the time. Racist directing... it was made in 1930s.

The film is not racist, it just portrays a time, when racism was normalized. Different drinking fountains for 'whites' and 'blacks' in the United States in 1939.

Yucky film.

Yawn

Gone with the wind is not the problem! We need movies, books, and picture to educate ppl! You don't get to rewrite history by pretending it never happened and storing it in the basement.

O vento levou! Mas todos nossos pré-conceitos não!

It's depicting how it was, is everyone thick or something?

Stick to talking about the UK's racism.

Gone with the wind is the most racist film ever made! The fact that an female african American received an oscar is proof of this racism racisthollywood Nazi

Gone with the wind is ‘racist’ because it depicts problematic truths, like a lot of slaves were happy and well treated, a lot of poor white ‘white trash’ got treated worse than almost any slave, and a lot of former slaves supported the confederacy even after the war.

Black panther is racist, white chicks is racist I demand they’re removed from streaming services

murky past? murky present

Wasn’t this published in your newspaper?
