Sportswear companies are facing a reckoning as Black employees demand representation in the industry indebted to Black culture

Once a company hires diverse talent, they're often ill-equipped to help employees move up at the company. "They're stuck in their entry-level roles or their mid-level roles with no room for advancement," said Pires DeGrace. Beyond the office, activists say there is still work to be done in other sectors of the footwear industry, like retail stores, for example, to support other Black people in the field.

"It's time to really take a look at the system that was developed and start creating change in some of those points of leverage," she said.Beyoncé partnered with Adidas to relaunch Ivy Park, her athleisure brand.. But for some industry people, this type of cultural influence is rarely seen beyond brands' outward messaging or campaigns.
