The forced amalgamation of Victorian fire-fighting services by the Andrews government is the "worst case of political bastardry I have ever seen in my time in politics,” according to Victorian Nationals leader Peter Walsh. Sweeping reforms came into effect today as the Country Fire Authority career staff and the Metropolitan Fire Brigade merged together to form the state's new Fire Rescue Victoria.

Mr Walsh said “it’s a tragedy for all those people who care about their community and give up their time voluntarily to fight fires”. “They are the heart and soul of our communities,” he told Sky News host Peta Credlin. Mr Walsh said the premier pushed the changes - which contributed to the resignation of 5,000 volunteers - in order to “pay back United Firefighter Union members campaigning for Daniel Andrews back in 2014”.
