Conservation groups have slammed moves to reclassify Australia's orange roughy fishery as sustainable under the Marine Stewardship Council certification guidelines.

Orange roughy live between 700 metres and 1500 metres deep. They roam across seabeds but congregate on underwater shelves and seamounts to breed, meaning they can be easily caught in large numbers.They live in cold water, and in Australia are mostly found off Tasmania, Victoria and the Great Australian Bight.

Mr Meder said the report contains a number of flaws that show a lack of understanding of the biology of the species and fishery. Certifying a fishery as sustainable is a significant step that can increase demand for that species and even put more pressure on the fishery, Mr Meder pointed out.Orange roughy numbers have increased in some fisheries.

Mr Meder claims that the MRAG Americas decision has failed to take these findings into account, along with other available scientific data. He said the report also suggested that a large fishing exclusion zone adjacent to the orange roughy fishery would provide insurance against any potential impacts to fish numbers.

"The results of our assessment for the Australian zone eastern orange roughy fishery, and responses to stakeholder input received, are in accordance with MSC procedures and"In the final hours of the public review stage we received the first comments from two [environmental] NGOs, however, under the MSC procedure, these comments were not admissible at this time because these stakeholders had not registered their interest earlier in the assessment process.

He said the results of the report show that there's "no doubt" the orange roughy fishery is sustainable.
