She shared that one year in particular, the family spent nine months on a global cruise, getting off at each and every port while completing more traditional "lessons" at sea. When their kids were 13 and 15 years old, the family chose to come back to the US and settle down in Los Angeles. Chanin noted that their children had extensive art and costume design portfolios, journals, and scrapbooks "replete with in-depth documentation of each destination," plus a plethora of other experiences that set them apart from most other students their age.
"I worked with a student whose parents spent tens of thousands of dollars every summer to send him to global immersion programs and university summer camps," said Chanin. "He went because he felt pressured to do so, yet never really felt he was in his element while pursuing any of these programs." "We used to go to China every summer to give our kids an immersion experience," Minkove said. "Unfortunately, we won't be going to China this summer and don't feel comfortable traveling elsewhere in the foreseeable future."
