I'm a Google recruiter who's interviewed thousands of candidates at top tech companies. I wish more job seekers knew these 4 things about the interview and hiring process.

Susie Song is a technical sourcer at Google and has previously worked as a sourcer and recruiter at LinkedIn and Samsung.

Most companies have a pretty robust referral program where they reward current employees with bonuses and perks. This is because companies value and trust their current employees to connect them with great candidates. It's also a more economical alternative to outsourcing to a recruiting agency.First, referrals are usually guaranteed a faster review of their applications, with updates along the process as well.

First, try reaching out to someone who might be on the team you're interested in applying to on LinkedIn. See if they'd be willing to spare you 15 minutes to ask questions about the role and the team, and you can use that time to share more about you and politely ask for a referral, as well. A very common mistake a job seeker makes is applying for a role they're either over or underqualified for based on the title of the role. To be successful in your job search, it is important to be realistic about whether you'd actually qualify for the job.

Pick out the most important keywords within the job description and make sure to include them in your resume Here's an example of an A+ STAR answer. If the interviewer asks, "Tell me about a time you had to meet a tight deadline," I could use the STAR method and respond like this: My company decided to launch an urgent project, which required 10 software engineers to be hired immediately. As a recruiter on a team of 2, I was tasked with the searching and hiring of at least half of that number.
