Though the artist posts images of herself often, she said that people still tended to assume that a man was behind the work.

"I'm thankful to be a woman in this industry, standing on the front lines, so to speak," Amy said. "I want to facilitate an inclusiveness in design where women, just like their male counterparts, get stories with substance, and product that looks good — plain and simple.

A former high school and college athlete, Lau said that female representation should be "non-negotiable" in the footwear industry and anywhere else.For Rothy's, a women's footwear and accessories brand that uses sustainable materials for its products, product development is a top priority. Using a 3D knitting process and recycled plastic water bottles, Dempsey Lowenberg designed the brand's signature slip-on sneaker in 2018, which she said was a product of the insight of her diverse team.

Jen became interested in sneakers when she started skating in the early 2000s. As the SB Dunk, a skating sneaker, became more popular, Jen started taking photos of her shoes to share with the world, and her page took off. "I hope that my photography and journey allows women to be more comfortable with wearing and showcasing their collections," Jen said. "I just want us to be more empowered to share and create within the industry."In her role as the New Balance's general manager for studio innovation, Katherine Petrecca oversees the project portfolio for footwear innovation and directs strategy and partnership initiatives.

According to Petrecca, it is important to have a broad range of diversity when it comes to leadership in product creation in order to create designs and products to meet all types of consumers. Rocker has also been instrumental in guiding product launches that focus on core values from within the company, such as Under Armour's Pride Collection.
