South Africa’s economy has been dealt a heavy blow by the outbreak of the pandemic, leaving millions without jobs while many companies have closed permanently.

JOHANNESBURG - Former president Kgalema Motlanthe said South Africa had the opportunity to rebuild itself post COVID-19 by focusing on revitalising the manufacturing industry in South Africa.

Motlanthe said while the virus exposed weaknesses in the health and economic systems, leaders should focus on rebuilding. A group of researchers from universities across the country surveyed 7,000 South Africans between February and April. “In February, women accounted for just under half of all employment or 47%, but they accounted for a staggering two thirds of the net job loss that occurred between February and April.”
