Netflix took back the Emmy nominations crown from HBO, but didn't have the most nominated show

Netflix first surpassed HBO in nominations in 2018, breaking the latter's 17-year streak for most nominations.Netflix once again has the Emmys nominations crown.

Nominations for the 72nd Emmys were announced on Tuesday and the streaming giant nabbed 160 total nominations this year across all categories. HBO followed with 107 nominations. Last year, HBO came out on top with 137 nominations compared to Netflix's 118. The former ultimately nabbed 37 wins while Netflix took home 27 Emmys.

This year continues a tug of war between Netflix and HBO that started in 2018, when Netflix surpassed HBO,for most Emmy nominations. The lead was more narrow then, though. Netflix gained 112 nods to HBO's 108. Netflix has significantly increased its output of original content over the years and its amount of Emmy nominations this year speaks to the impressive size of its library. As of June 18,WarnerMedia's new streaming platform, HBO Max, followed with 190 originals, which included HBO programs. While Netflix had more total nods than HBO, the latter had the most nominated series with "Watchmen," which gained 26 nominations.
