Nearly 200,000 households in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are still without power a week after Tropical Storm Isaias hit the Northeast, prompting investigations from governors questioning why it’s taken so long to get customers out of the dark.... [+]Newsday via Getty ImagesMore than 100,000 customers in New York and New Jersey are without power, according to local outlet PIX11, and Long Island alone has over 46,000 outages.

Though the dozen utility companies serving the tri-state area—including Con Edison, NYSEG, National Grid and Jersey Central Power & Light—have relieved thousands of customers over the past few days, governors are slamming them for inadequate preparation. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont both declared states of emergency after Isaias arrived, launching individualIsaias ripped through the Northeast on August 4, knocking out power for over 2 million New York, New Jersey and Connecticut customers.

The continued outages are particularly difficult for the large number of people working from home because of coronavirus-era regulations. “ConEd & PSE&G did a lousy job preparing for Tropical Storm Isaias and [New York State Public Service] will continue to investigate,” Cuomo in a Monday tweet. “Utilities should know: if you don’t provide a service, then your franchise can be revoked.” Con Edison’s President Tim Cawley defended the company on Saturday, sourcing the extent of the storm’s damage as the reason for the restoration delays.
