Without gov't aid, it could be lights out for Richmond Night Market

“It’s heartbreaking,” Raymond Cheung, the entrepreneur who introduced the Asian night market to Metro Vancouver 20 years ago, said as he looked around. “Just coming down here is so weird and not seeing the tents set up, the colourful flags, the smell of all the foods.Raymond Cheung, owner of the Richmond Night Market, stands inside the mouth of a T-Rex, a theme of last year’s market.

The province has announced a $1.5-billion COVID-19 package that will be unveiled in September and the 19,000-member Tourism Industry Association of B.C. has asked for $680 million of it. “What we are asking for is a return on the investments the tourism and hospitality sector has made to the provincial and national economy over decades,” Vivek Sharma, chairman of the provincial tourism association, said when the group made its application for provincial aid three weeks ago.

In Cheung’s case, as a seasonal business, he is unable to make up any losses this winter. As a niche business, he’s ineligible for aid. He is a reluctant case study of someone who has fallen through the cracks.Raymond Cheung ordered 100,000 2020 Richmond Night Market coupon books at $2 a book to celebrate the night market’s 20 anniversary. Now the coupons and other special anniversary tents, equipment and paraphernalia are worthless.

RICHMOBD NIGHT MARKETS a hotbed for Corona -19 VIRUS.. certainly diarrhea from food vendors!

I believe this guy? To many business doing cash only in Richmond all with their hands out begging for more free money

I haven't a problem with that. It's the best place to get a case of diarrhea .. Been there twice...!!

The night market sucks

To be honest it was going downhill and their location is due to be a hotel parking lot. It was enjoyable but getting there was not fun. Bad drivers who did not know what line ups meant. Traffic congestion.

Its Chinese, they have money.

Why would the taxpayer bail out a totally commercial enterprise like that?! Priorities, people!

Let it die. All the merchandise can be found on aliexpress and all the food can be found in food courts and restaurants. $5 entry fee is scam. Maybe city of Richmond can use government lands to do something similar.

Good night, then.

⭐️You are the weakest link buh bye ⭐️ ⭐️worldinchaos ⭐️

The stuff he threw away could have been used as fund raiser? Coupon book for the existing merchants that have store fronts? I’m sure ideas were there to help and not waste.

Everything's made in China. Shop your local farmers market and let the night market go.

No big loss.
