Justin Trudeau's rift with finance minister Bill Morneau weighs on ambitious recovery plan

To date, the government has unveiled nearly 70 different measures to cushion the economy from the shock of COVID-19. The prime minister announced most of them himself, at daily briefings outside his Ottawa residence he held during the height of the pandemic. Carney’s sudden involvement caught Morneau by surprise, one insider said. It was an embarrassing development, given that Morneau, finance minister since 2015, has struggled at times to get Trudeau on the phone himself.

Now the question is how Trudeau will handle his most important cabinet post as his government prepares a new agenda for the fall. His Liberal Party got an initial boost in polls in the pandemic, but that faded in summer as it emerged that both Trudeau and Morneau had family links to a charity that was handed a lucrative government contract.

The big question is how ambitious Canada can afford to be. Advocates close to Trudeau are pushing for a transformational social and economic agenda and see Morneau as an obstacle. Too “orthodox,” is how one official close to the prime minister describes him.

This “rift” is just a way for Morneau to “resign” with a modicum of dignity. Carney will step in to bring an air of legitimacy. Jr. will insist we need to blow billions more to divert attention from his own cesspool. Can’t we just get rid of Liberal sleaze?

In reading this article..it certainly seems Morneau was concerned with the economy somewhat in rolling out billions of program funding. Trudeau/ PMO. their polling numbers..

Recovery for who? For Liberal supporters? While small businesses die

If Morneau had any concern about Trudeau's fiscal recklessness, he would have detached himself from Skippy's butt cheek long before this. Obviously a way to not draw even more attention to Liberal ethics violations.

I have been around politics a long time and disagreements among the PM and his minister of finance is nothing new. Whether you're Paul Martin, or Jim Flaherty, or anyone has had riffs with the bosses. It's a tough job to do. Bill Morneau is rich so he will be fine either way.

Huge BS story. Not one bit of evidence that these two were ever at odds on any Liberal policy. NOT ONE! The only ones swallowing this hook are the media. Canadians know Trudeau cannot fire home without resigning.
