Multiple states are seeking $26.4 billion from drug companies over the opioid crisis, according to a report

... [+]About a dozen attorneys general are seeking a collective $21.14 billion from three distributors including McKesson Corp, AmerisourceBergen and Cardinal Health; and $5.28 billion from Johnson & Johnson.

More than 3,000 state, local governments and Native American tribes have sued companies for allegedly overstating the benefits of opioids while downplaying the risks and contributing to the influx of opioids into their communities. The distributors, in particular, have been accused of failing to flag suspicious orders that were diverted for improper uses, an allegation the companies have denied though some have managed to reach settlements with the DOJ on the issue.CNNseparately that a notice of claim filed in bankruptcy court by 49 states, Washington D.C. and multiple other U.S. territories, claims that opioid manufacturers have cost the U.S. economy $2.15 trillion.

In the filing, which was reportedly made on Monday, New York state is seeking to claim $165 billion, the report added, noting that an official acknowledged that the states are not likely to actually recoup that figure.10.3 million. In a landmark opioid case that went to trial, an Oklahoma judge last August ordered Johnson & Johnson to payfor its role in fueling the opioid crisis, a bill that was later reduced to $465 million in November. While a few other cases have resulted in small settlements, a majority of them remain unresolved. Shareholders of many of the companies facing trials have pushed the defendants to reach deals with the states which would cap their liability on the issue.
