CSM's (CSM_news) new zine, Platform, is made by POC students and spotlights diverse perspectives within the fashion industry.

“For as long as we can remember, inequality, discrimination, and underrepresentation have been at the heart of the elitist fashion industry. Sadly, too many young, talented people have gone unnoticed because of lack of opportunities and systemic racism,” write Central Saint Martins students Yelena Grelet and Hannah Karpel.

“was really the first time we had a place to publish our journalism and report on fashion news without filtering ourselves for a larger company,” they add. “The response was overwhelming, and we started to realize how much young people are really craving journalism that is honest, satirical, investigative, and ultimately from young voices.”, made by BIPOC students and spotlighting diverse perspectives within the fashion industry.

“Evident in our interviews featured in the digital zine, many BAME [Black, African, and Minority Ethnic] creatives growing up did not originally consider entering the fashion industry at all. They did not see a reflection of themselves there to begin with and, unlike many who go in with a little black book, had no one to help them,” Grelet and Karpel continue.

The feeling is mutual. Both Grelet and Karpel describe the support from Kane’s team as a boost to pursue even bigger stories for their inaugural issue. “The ball was completely in our court, and we had regular meetings with Stephanie and Alex from the Christopher Kane team, who would offer us advice and guidance throughout the whole planning process. It meant that we could dream a little bigger with our ideas,” they write.

Oré Alaja echoes this: “The fashion industry has made plenty of claims for inclusivity, sustainability, better working conditions for years. I would simply love for the industry to finally pull through and make it happen!”
