Johanna Faries, commissioner of the Call of Duty esports league, on what she's learned at the helm of a growing industry after 12 years at the NFL (by loadedlove)

Johanna Faries joined Activision Blizzard as commissioner of the city-based Call of Duty esports league two years ago after spending 12 years in the NFL leading business development and strategy.

"The perspective is more about growth and iteration, not that there needs to be perfection on day one, or even year one, but rather what can we learn, how quickly can we apply it and improve," she said.

Now with esports, revenue also comes from streamer collaborations, micro-transactions, and warzone-driven tournaments, which Faries said generate more opportunity. "Back in the NFL, I launched several years of the NFL Women's Summit, and it was much about the correlation between women in the C-suite and their resume on different fields and courts as young athletes or pro athletes," Faries said. "It's astonishing to see how connected sports and business is.
