. An ecosystem is a sense of balance. It’s like farming; if you exhaust the land, you will not be able to farm anymore. You need to anticipate and rest so that you will have a balanced relationship, and I think that it will take time for our industry to really include that in its process.I think there will be a huge resurgence of [emerging] brands. My vision for them is that they will all come together and find ways to share factories and suppliers.

It’s great that there is more support—and an awareness of the importance of supporting young innovators—but the expectation placed on them is totally unrealistic, especially with the biofabricated stuff. Even when you have proof of concept—yeah you can make one handbag or one shoe, but to make 10 million of those is a further level of complexity. I still, 100 percent, believe that the future is about biofabrication and growing much better materials with biology, not oil.
