Josh Frydenberg has signalled the Coalition is prepared to bring forward $158 billion in personal income tax cuts slated for mid-2022 to provide greater economic stimulus after it was revealed Australia was in its first recession in three decades.

The Treasurer indicated infrastructure spending, cutting red tape, reskilling workers and offering tax relief for business would be at the heart of the October federal budget. Mr Frydenberg yesterday confirmed Australia's Gross Domestic Product contracted seven per cent - the worst quarterly contraction on record. Prime Minister Scott Morrison described the economic news as "devastating" but sought to reassure people things would improve.
