Subscription sports website and application The Athletic has weathered the pandemic's sports shutdown and has 1 million subscribers, but the endgame for the company is still unknown.

. The Athletic receives no money from its T-Mobile deal, Mather said. Rather, the company hopes the one-year free trial will showcase the value of the content to a new audience.

Digital subscription businesses are still a relatively new phenomenon, noted Stromberg, who is also on The Athletic's board. He pointed to Duolingo and Peloton as other companies that are showing people will pay for content they love on the internet. But it's still unclear how Stromberg is going to monetize his firm's investment. Bedrock typically has a five-to-10 year investment horizon before it pushes to exit an investment. Stromberg acknowledged that The Athletic "may get closer to 10 years" before he starts discussing endgame plans with Mather and Hansmann. The Athletic has raised $139.5 million to date and has no plans to raise more, Mather and Hansmann said.

One way they are doing it: illegally renewing customers who cancelled. Via email last year: 'we're sorry to see you go. It pains us to say that your subscription to The Athletic has been successfully cancelled. You will no longer be billed' Five days ago: rebilled for 12 mos.

Let’s see how the games survive. Sports is dead. Take it to China and kneel. The American people could care less now.

Worth every nickel ...NO ONE matches their content

Proud subscriber here!

Same energy

1 million idiots who subscribe to these scabs

The discounting is more like Time Inc circa 2016. This isn’t a business model, it’s a desperation play!

Shame they walked away/fired so many talented writers. Be a good show to those of us who have been with them since the beginning (myself) to start hiring some of them back, especially in the major markets.

Sounds like a good time to give chaddundas his job back! 🤔

Are they gonna hire back all the people they laid off during the pandemic?

Cancelled this trash. The TheAthletic started out good. But then just hired all the same bums away from ESPN and the other majors and it slowly became the same garbage. Plus you have idiots like Andrew Baggerly getting drunk in his hotel room sending out political tweets

No one pays for this garbage. Fools don

This subscription can never be cancelled.

T Mobile Tuesday offer a month ago gave away 1yr memberships to all tmobile users.

These guys run the fantasy industry

How many are the result of the FREE TMobile Tuesday subscription that was given to TMobile customers?

Best service in sports journalism. Congrats. Joined the Day they started their NHL coverage w mirtle et al. Excellent writers from many diff backgrounds. New people getting chances toshowwhat theycan do. Looking forward to the next 3 years!

This is awesome

Meh I got a free subscription from tmobile tuesday & I bet that's a substantial amount of the subscribers

I see there are actually one million idiots that read this racist trash.

Great move timkawakami !!

What helps is that every newspaper went to the paywall structure too... and if you are a sports fan who has to pay for one, it kind of has to be Athletic

mattbarrows Happy subscriber for 3+ years. It truly is the best. Every sport and every team all in one place. mattbarrows & LombardiHimself are Worth the price of admission for this 49ers fan 👏🏻 👏🏻

darrenrovell The National was first back in ‘90. Turns out they were too far ahead of their time!

ThomasDrance Hey theathletic if you're doing so well why did you fire a third of your staff?

BREAKING: realDonaldTrump was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for his hand in reaching the IsraelUAEDeal.

but they still let go some great writers. I almost didn't renew. TheAthletic TheAthleticNSH

They got my ass when my trial expired. Last thing I needed was another political sports writing page.

darrenrovell It's propped up by cheap short term subscribers and wealthy white liberal benefactors. Lady Thatcher always said at some point you run out of other people's money.

someone do a story on how they got the sticks that far up each others asses just prior to the photo op.

darrenrovell Fuck the athletic

darrenrovell Because they keep it about sports.

I will jump into a volcano before I pay for sporting content

rudedogreyes BOOM. Kudos to great coverage. joerexrode davidubben

These old fart guests you have need to stop saying the economy is good because the markets are good! Wall Street ISN’T Main Street!

Paying for sports information? It will fail soon.

T-mobile gave a full year to a bunch of people a month or so ago

Cool and they fired 1/3 of their writers and cut sub costs to get there.

BuffaloVogl I was a subscriber for the first year. Cancelled . Thought I was going to get great sports coverage. Instead just another Republican hating shitshow. Keep politics out of sports.

Let’s not forget T-Mobile Tuesday’s gave away free 1 year codes to existing customers.

It’s top notch, I’ve had it for almost 2 years

timkawakami Happy for tim and entire Bay Area team. Took a leap. It’s working out

mattbarrows Damnnnn

BuffaloVogl Does this count free promotional subscriptions?

Thanks T-Mobile!

that T-Mobile Tuesday deal helped

Subscribers and paying subscribers are very different

I wonder how many of these are people who forgot to cancel the free 3-month subscription during the shutdown lmao they got my ass

AdamVingan How many are they basically giving away? I've been a subscriber for quite a while, and it makes me angry to see a new discount every week. By now, it shouldn't be necessary. TheAthletic
