Four company directors and a factory manager who were held for investigations into the dumping of effluents into Sungei Gong, Rawang are expected to face multiple charges of alleged pollution to the environment today.
Selangor police CID chief SAC Datuk Fadzil Ahmat said yesterday that the Attorney-General’s Chambers ordered that the five suspects be jointly charged for “discharging or depositing scheduled waste in the environment leading to pollution” under Section 25 of the Environment Quality Act and “mischief by injury to works of irrigation” under Section 430 of the Penal Code.Fadzil said four others who were arrested in connection with the case were freed on bail.
The four directors of the family-run Yip Chee Seng & Sons Sdn Bhd in Batu Arang, Rawang were arrested on Sept 4 have spent the past 10 days in remand to facilitate investigations into the case. The brothers who are aged between 50 and 60 were held after large quantities of effluents suspected to have originated from their company were found dumped in Sungai Gong.
The effluents led to the pollution of the Sungai Selangor water treatment plant which saw a major water cut imposed in the Klang Valley that affected over 1.2 million households.During their detention, the families of the directors had also come out in their defence, denying they were behind the pollution of the river. They also provided documents to show that they had engaged a scheduled waste disposal company to dispose material detrimental to the environment.
