Arts workers are pushing for Congress to help save an industry that’s valued at $877.8 billion and employs four million people nationwide.

Schumer’s push came one day after more than 260 theaters in 37 statesto congressional leaders urging Congress to provide $9 billion in emergency funding for the arts and entertainment industry—reflecting the $9 billion in losses the industry has already sustained as a result of the pandemic—noting that without additional funding, “the future of many cherished art institutions will remain in jeopardy.

Independent campaigns have also pushed for funding, including a recent Be An #ArtsHero Day of Action on Labor Day that urged Congress to support the Defend Arts Workers NowMore than 2,000 performance venues were lit in red light on September 1 to raise awareness for arts funding through an$877.8 billion. That’s how much the arts and cultural industry contributed to the economy in 2017,the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis, making up 4.5% of the U.S.
