“An ANU study of refugees arriving between 2002 and 2011 found they were more likely to be on Centrelink, but after three years, the numbers dropped dramatically as they transitioned to the disability pension. Barely a fifth of the refugees studied were employed 3 years after arrival,” he said. “All migrants arrive wide eyed and full of hope. They are universally ashamed to accept welfare but become it’s understandable if they become demoralised in the face of labour market challenges.
