Mrs Oludewa Edodo-Thorpe is a director on the board of some companies in Nigeria. The Corporate Lawyer was recently appointed a director on the international Board of Soroptimist International, an organisation for women in business and other professions.
The theme of this year’s International Day of the Girl Child is ‘My Voice, Our Equal Future’ and it re-emphasises the need for gender equality. In what ways do you expect the Nigerian government to demonstrate this? It is a shame many men still feel the place of women is in the kitchen or bedroom. Because of that, they don’t want to concede that a woman should sit at the table with them, so gender equality becomes a mirage. When you are discussing something that concerns women and girls and there is no woman at the table, then you should know you cannot discuss what is of interest to her. You can only discuss from a man’s viewpoint and it’s never correct.
Role models also play an important role in nurturing young girls. As an accomplished woman, what kind of childhood did you have?
