The prime minister has assured any movements on Australian coal on behalf of China is most likely “part of their normal process” as reports have emerged Beijing is halting imports of Australian coal. Prime Minister Scott Morrison told press in Queensland that Trade Minister Simon Birmingham is “looking at those reports” and will raise any issues which arise with the relevant authorities.
Two industry newswires have reported the Chinese government has told several state-owned factories and companies to halt exports of Australian coal. He said though it is “not uncommon” for domestic quotas to be enforced in China especially in terms of coal. “It’s not uncommon that from time to time the Chinese government will have domestic quotas to support local production and local jobs,” Mr Morrison said. “That is not a new thing.
Maybe they also see the reality of climate change like scientists, business and populations do around the world.
This comes as a shock to nobody.
