President Trump’s economic record comes in two parts, before Covid-19 and after. The second part wiped out many gains of the first.

In the first, which lasted until March, the economy reached historic milestones for jobs, income and stock prices. While it’s debatable whether it was the best U.S. economy ever, as the president has said, it was without question good and getting better for millions of Americans.

The second was not his fault...

Record ?

You can't separate the two because his mishandling of the coronavirus has made the economic suffering so much worse than it had to be. Even before the coronavirus he borrowed from future generations with increased deficit and rollbacks to environmental protections.

THE FIRST WASNT GOOD EITHER...WE WERE IN A RECESSION IN FEBRUARY!!!

You forgot to mention that most economic gains under Trump were continuations of gains made by Obama.

It appears that all the good of his presidency is very fragile and is crumbling!!

Grandpa has voted GOP all his life but lately he’s having nightmares about Covid, death & Trump winning another term. He has decided to vote for Biden when early voting starts on 19 Oct in Florida.

Was this written by the Biden campaign?

Congratulations!!!Very well done!!! Best Wishes God blessing you all🇮🇳💕💥

To be clear, lockdowns mandated by Democratic Governors in key states wiped out economic gains not Trump.

djt ?pense?/ a total failure in worst potus/vp/ ever in our history/.they are both guilty of over 216,000 usa lives, because of all their lies about how deadly the coivid-trump/pense virus was they knew for months ,then lied/.notified no one but the gop party, behind closed doors/.

imagine what the dems could have done with a 1.7 trillion tax cut? the fiscally 'con'servative republican party______

I love economic articles that refuse to pin the second part on the guy in charge, like our country could not possibly have been competently led during the pandemic. Or that billions on billions in bailouts and subsidies are something that happens during healthy economic 'gains'

WSJ ... STOP!! .... What has happened to you? This is as stupid as stupid gets . Fire the intern that wrote this!!

Wow very insightful headline

Trump inherited a great economy with a decreasing unemployment rate. He promised the tax cuts would pay for themselves. They did not. Instead they drove up the national debt by 4Trillion. 1Trillion per year. this is before Covid. he had no plan for the economy. none then, now now

Is it really trumps plan when its the governors who chose to shut down their states?

Hoover's start was ok too.

3 parts, Obama's coattails Trump's economy COVID depression you can see a clear flattening of the economy once his tax plan was passed.

Before COVID The deficit was one trillion (double from 2016) and GDP was less than 2%. And we were in a manufacturing recession.

Today would have been George Floyd’s 47th birthday. He should still be alive today celebrating another year with his family and friends. We need justice and to ensure that this never happens again—starting with banning chokeholds and creating a national standard for use of force.

what has not changed between the two is the record debt he had accrued for this country both with tax cuts and fiscal stimulus

and the gains of the first are attributable to Obama
