Similar to Facebook and Twitter, Reddit says that the company will look for job seekers from any location.
The prospect of not needing to live within commuting distance of a job or applying for a role anywhere in the U.S. sounds appealing. It could be a career-changer. A person who’s stuck in a region that doesn’t offer appropriate jobs would have to settle for what’s available. When companies are open to recruiting talent away from the major business hubs, it opens up new vistas for a large number of Americans.
The downside is that job seekers must contend with more competition, especially with unemployment at all-time high levels. Up until now, candidates worried about the other people in their immediate vicinity applying for the same jobs. Now, they’ll have to contend with the volume of applicants applying from all over the U.S.
Having spoken to a large number of job seekers, they’ve told me that they’ve applied to positions outside the radius of where they live. The overwhelming majority have said that companies, even if they offer remote work, still want people who live nearby. This may be attributed to the fact that many corporations are notoriously slow to enact change and cling to their business-as-usual approach.
It seems that this unfortunate period will last for a while and we’ll see how Reddit and other corporations’ work-related decisions play out.
Just read the article... what's the catch? No mention of it. Cool clickbait headline!
