Aviation chief's warn industry will “not exist” as they call for pre-travel Covid testing

The Irish Aviation industry will “not exist” without urgent political action, the Oireachtas transport committee has been told.

Last week, the government agreed to align Ireland with the EU's new international travel system to regulate travel restrictions across the continent. Passengers arriving from a 'Green' country would not be required to quarantine or take a test on arrival. Arrivals from countries labelled 'Red' or 'Orange' under the system will need to be tested or quarantined.

The committee was told that the pandemic has “devastated” the aviation industry in Ireland, with levels of air traffic falling to those not seen since the late 1980s. The airline is expected to tell the Oireachtas transport committee that the Minister for Transport is jeopardising 465,000 jobs with his “absence of a coherent aviation policy.”
