With the vast majority of Victoria's lobster catch going to China, local rock lobster fishers say they may not be able to keep working if trade with China collapses. trade China foreignaffairs fishing

Trade Minister Simon Birmingham said the government and industry leaders were working through official channels to resolve the impasse.

Mr Nolle said Victorian rock lobster fishers might not be able to continue working if trade with China collapsed.Markus Nolle wants Victorians to embrace locally caught lobster to support the industry.Earlier this year the local price of lobsters fell dramatically after fishers were unable to export their catches to China.

Mr Nolle, who is based in Apollo Bay, said an education campaign was needed to explain to Victorians how they could get the best value from lobsters. Too often, he said, buyers ate only the tail meat and discarded the rest."If people buy local seafood you know it's been fished responsibly." When exports to China stopped this year, lobster prices dropped to $85 a kilogram but then quickly rebounded to about $140 a kilogram as trade resumed."We’ve found with COVID that because people couldn't dine out, there were a lot more people buying lobster," she said.

My suggestion, be less greedy and sell them locally at prices that were reasonable back in the 1980's.

Can only be a good thing for lobsters. endliveexports

China is playing political games. We need another ‘big’ trading partner. And when we do, give China nothing.

Long live the lobster, probably not a bad thing. More for domestic consumption at a less ridiculous price, more for normal divers, and I’m sure the lobsters need an opportunity to re-populate. The small size of lobsters you see being sold and served these days is disgusting.

Find new markets - ban China !!!

Why not sell direct to the public here? Online sales with click and collect?

Why don’t they sell it locally? Yum.

Plenty of Australians would eat reasonably priced lobster

Aust govt has betrayed Aussie businesses and families, by serving its American masters in Washington, Aust govt has turned its back on decades of economic gain and growth from trade with China! Not covid, Aust is now involved in US poorly planned & executed trade war with China.

Biting the hand that feeds ultimately results in a slap in the face.

Good leave them in the sea

Heart bleeds for you guys 😂 ripoff

We’re not happy with our biggest client(94%) and we will push small clients to buy more.... our business will survive with this strategy?

Send in Matthew Guy.

Some at home parity long overdue from the lobster farmers perhaps😏 Eggs in one basket and all that Deal with the devil and this is what happens. Australians would pay $50/kilo at home which would still return a profit for farmers to live comfortably off.

However, if the Communist Party thinks that the Australian government is disobedient and sanctions Australia and does not buy your lobster, do you ask the Australian government to bow to the Chinese Communist Party?

A lifeline for lobsters?

Good ! Selfish. Sell em for $30kg to locals Aussies

Oh my goodness 🥺 what’s wrong with Victoria’s lobster 🦞 industry 🤔 why they are only care about CCP😳…sounds like they’re not only be a CCP’s dogs 🐕 but also treat very badly to them own country 🤨why🧐…what a rubbish talking 💩hopefully Australia 🇦🇺 government look into!

You can thank the LNP for destroying relationships with our biggest trading partner

I guess that happens if you put all your eggs in one basket & the market collapses. And, as a local Victorian who probs doesn't get to see it and probs can't afford it anyway, the issue for me is? ...

Either way that's one of many industries that need to stop selling to China and seek other markets. There is a term in economics to describe this Chinese approach. They are known technically, as 'wankers'.

Or they could...and stay with me here.....sell to the domestic market for once

Why not sell them here!

If these idiots only rely on China they deserve to go bust

Could try to sell it to people in Australia for less than $100/kg? Crazy thought I know. Zero sympathies here.

Time to find another market

Try selling them to us....

I’m sure the local Victorians will enjoy some cheaper lobster this Xmas.

Trade has been completely held in disdain by politicians who think being a US lapdog is the ultimate in political achievement. Under the guise of National Security our poĺlies have deserted our primary producers. burd2018

Money hungry Vic producers can’t sell to China. Oh cry me a river. How about selling locally?

I'm struggling to have any sympathy for this. They're exploiting a creature for profit, and exploiting an insanely obsessively greedy consumerist nation. Time to pay the price.

How did you guys exist before China?

But wont sell em to us at the same price..

Guess they’ll have to sell them to scummy old aussies

How about fair prices for lobster for locals? LobsterForLocals

Blame ScottyFromMarketing he's done such a great job building relations with our biggest client and supplier

npettigrove311

Well sell it to people in Melbourne then! WTF is this?!?

It'd be nice if we could get lobster at home for a reasonable price. $99 a kilo is too much for me from the market.

And what? You won’t sell it to us Australians because
