Amazon-backed Aurora is buying Uber's self-driving unit despite its terrible reputation. Its CEO explains why he sees value in the troubled program.

ATG and forming a partnership with Uber. In exchange for ATG and $400 million in cash, Urmson said Aurora will give Uber a 26% equity stake and that Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi will take a seat on its board of directors.

"Having had a chance to kind of kick the tires, so to speak, and do the work we have as part of diligence, we've been excited about a number of the things we've discovered there," he said. "You have that many smart, hardworking people working on something, there's going to be interesting technology there," Urmson told Business Insider.
