British shoppers worried about the government failing to secure a post-Brexit trade deal with the European Union should not stockpile food, business secretary Alok Sharma said on Monday.

Sharma said he was confident food supplies would be maintained even if Britain leaves the bloc without a trade deal.“I would say to everyone - do your normal shopping as you would do and I think we’ll find we’re going to be absolutely fine,” he said. The British Retail Consortium said on Sunday that retailers were doing everything they could to prepare for all eventualities on Jan. 1 - increasing their stocks of tins, toilet rolls and other longer life products so there would be sufficient supply of essential products.

I wasn't planning to stockpile food. But after seeing that a govt minister is telling people that there's no need to do it, I'm off to the supermarket.

So aside from a Tory being 'confident', there seems to be zero evidence, facts or details. Better to stock up, bc Tory confidence or promises turn out empty more often than not.

I haven't trusted these dickheads since day one. They were always going to fuck it up. I've been stockpiling since mid summer. Fortunately, the Brexshitters seem blissfully unaware of the forthcoming shit show, so demand has not increased.

Maybe people wouldn't be stockpiling if they had any confidence in the government acting in a way that prioritised an uninterrupted supply?

Translation: BUY ALL ZAT YOU CAN

Yeh ok I think I'll ignore that actually because so called minister wil not be feeding me when I'm hungry

Too late.

And Donald Trump said it would be over by Easter.

Welp that's my cue, thanks.

But food prices may rise say British shoppers

STOCKPILE ALL DRY GOODS AND TO HELL WITH THESE CLOWNS IN GOVERNMENT. THERE WILL BE SHORTAGES IN THE MONTHS AHEAD. WHY ARE SUPPLIERS STOCKPILING? THEY ARE NOT LISTENING TO GOVERNMENT. THEY KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING DAILY THE CLOWNS IN GOVERNMENT DO NOT

Will toilet paper be the first to be stockpiled, or does that only happen in the US?! 🤔🤦🏽‍♂️ 🤣

LOL, the entire world knows the UK supply chain will suffer even in case of a deal. That is the inevitable consequence of leaving the single market.

On the other side recommendation for supermarkets is to stockpile food. All clear?

I choose to panic buy truffles.

If they tell you not to stockpile please go to the supermarket and do exactly the opposite of what they’re saying. If you can do it start now as even if a last minute deal is struck it won’t be beneficial to you .

Well done idiots will now stockpile. Scaremongering.

The problem with this chaotic brexit and the quality of the UK government and its representatives is that it has created a large deficit of trust in their statements and ability to look after us...and hence = stockpiling.

Stockpilers should have all of their provisions confiscated and those greedy, selfish despicably people should be thrown into prison... Totally unacceptable behaviour...

why not. he forces them to stay at home, so of course they stockpile food.

In other words 'me first', you commoners can wait.

This is a great marketing tactic 👀

Says the bloke with a well-stocked larder.

I remember BR telling us to not flush loos in stations. The evidence on tracks while waiting for the 18.50 would suggest the futility of the exercise.

If 2020 taught me anything, Britain’s should start stockpiling food

I wonder if u🔑 in trouble some 🤔😜

I’m hearing that government has been warned that if EU talks fail then they expect widespread stockpiling to occur in lead up to Christmas, and rationing before Christmas.

People should ALWAYS stockpile food. Just do so responsibly. Whenever you buy something you need, just buy one or two extras, too. Gradually, you will have a store of food and other supplies, so that you don’t become the jerk with three cartloads of toilet paper at the checkout.

So they are telling supermarkets to stockpile but consumers not to. They haven’t thought this through have they?

If food supplies are not going to be adversely affected by Brexit then why, exactly, are they building huge lorry parks?

Advice like that is always guaranteed to start panic buying.

Which basically means you are an idiot if you do not stockpile food.

(I'm just an ignorant American posting memes don't mind me)

Damn a Minister has advised not to stockpile. Better get down to the supermarket.

...Whilst supermarkets are quietly being encouraged by their suppliers to do exactly that. This will go oh so very well

DON'T PANIC via YouTube

good

Hunger Games = Brexit

Who’ll now go out and stockpile food!!!

That minister can probably afford the price rises.
