At least 200 organisations – including government agencies and companies – around the world have been hacked as part of a suspected Russian cyber-attack.

There are fears some deep, institutional United States secrets might have been stolen during the hack. Curtin University Professor Joe Siracusa told Sky News it was “unacceptable” that Russian espionage was able to access US government agencies.

“America is the world’s leader in technology, and not only did it not deter this attack, it didn’t even detect it,” he said. “Some private provider had to inform the United States government that 12 agencies and 18,000 accounts have been infiltrated by Russian espionage. “America is under attack, the United States government has failed to protect its own digital infrastructure.”
