Google told scientists to avoid casting its tech in a negative light after a 'sensitive topics' review. Now, they must consult a PR team before pursuing those topics.

Google launched a "sensitive topics" review this year and asked at least three of its researchers to not cast its technology in a negative light, sources close to the matter told Reuters.

Google's new review procedure asks that researchers consult with legal, policy, and public relations teams before pursuing topics such as face and sentiment analysis and categorizations of race, gender, or political affiliation, according to internal webpages explaining the policy. "This doesn't mean we should hide from the real challenges" posed by the software, the manager added.
