U.S. stocks moved higher at the start of Thursday's session as investors discounted the riots in Washington D.C. and instead looked forward to the potential for more fiscal stimulus.

U.S. stocks moved higher at the start of Thursday's session as investors discounted the riots in Washington D.C. and instead looked forward to the potential for more fiscal stimulus under a Democratic-controlled Congress. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.69% advanced 144 points, or 0.5%, to 30,975.

The S&P 500 SPX, +1.32% rose 0.7% to 3,773, surpassing its previous record close of 3,756.07 set on Dec. 31. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +2.08% gained 1.1% to 12,886. Bath & Beyond Inc. shares BBY, +1.75% rose 0.5% Thursday, after the retailer posted weaker-than-expected sales and profit for its fiscal third quarter.
