Opinion | In 1963, MLK called for a national minimum wage. Today, McDonald's workers across the nation are on strike to achieve it.

I make just $10 an hour working at McDonald's in Memphis, and it's nowhere near enough to cover basic necessities every month for me and my baby daughter. I haven't even been able to furnish my apartment, because every cent of every paycheck has to go towards keeping a roof over our heads and putting food on the table. I can't think about buying a couch when I can barely afford an apartment.

Dr. King understood that a livable wage is one of the most powerful ways to lift up every community and reduce racial inequality. Ahead of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, Dr. King and his co-organizers released a We are facing a turning point as we enter what will hopefully be the final months of the COVID-19 pandemic. It's not enough to return to a status quo that left Black and brown workers vulnerable to the worst impacts of the virus, with the federal government failing to take enough action to protect all workers. We need fundamental change to rewrite the rules of the economy and dismantle systemic racism that has haunted us for generations.

Robots replacing these workers in 3, 2, 1.

The printing of fiat is driving asset prices artificially high while technology is driving human labor cost down. If the service you provide as a human can be easily copied then supply/demand will dictate your wage. Vicious circle that only UBI can fix....sadly

Hope they thought this through... Those jobs won't exist, if there's a $15 minimum wage...

Another way to really make sure those small businesses are crushed for good

Okay so now a big mac will cost $25. And then McDonald's will automate the entire process and have 1 employee in every store

That is because MLK has to keep the black folk under control by giving them poverty money. Poor people don’t realize that $15 is poverty level

Bring in the robots and kiosks

Surely her husband's income helps with this?

Bro I work in a financial services office for $14 , now a burger flipper is gonna make more than me or make my employer to raise me me more than they cna manage , this is gonna backfire when they all get replaced by ipads and just have one dude in the back making that $15

These jobs will be eliminated by robots before the end of 2021 if owners are forced to pay higher minimum wage

Cool story...I'll be at ChickfilA

Good, working class wages have been stagnant in the US for 30 yrs. Neoliberals have had a 30yr party of increasing corporate profits through arbitraging labor costs via outsourcing & immigration.

McDonalds already added order screens, they will cut more jobs to accommodate the change in labor costs. The higher & more drastic the change, the more likely the jobs are to go away altogether... these are not difficult concepts.

I worked at McDonald’s and I know how shit it can be. Go get that dollar my dudes. Minimum wage needs to be raised anyways these people are criminally underpaid

New McDonald's employees

Good. They should start beating up rude customers too.

when brand new inexperienced workers get $15 per hour, they are TAKING AWAY and STEALING from already-experienced workers' wages

We already have a minimum wage. The problem is that minorities and black community have been manipulated to believe that $15/hr is even a good minimum wage. $15/hr doesn’t mean anything because inflation will make $15/hr like $5/hr I don’t care though, america deserves it.

You go!

GOOD FOR THEM!!

Lmfao if you want more money get a higher paying job you get paid for your work

they can't even get an order right or make a decent looking sandwich

Do they know it’s on Bidens Plan?

Soooo... why the strike? It’s already been promised, right? Get back to work. FTLOG.
