In Canada, requests for pandemic-related relief for our national carriers has been countered by arguments that airlines have acted unfairly by, for example, refusing to reimburse passengers for cancelled flights. The big question this raises is how can a brand build and sustain trust when short-term actions to stay afloat may undermine long-term support. In April 2020, the brand trust research team at the Gustavson School of Business mobilized a followup study to our annual January 2020 report to gauge changes in consumer trust after COVID-19.

Air Canada was also quick to implement protective travel measures, such as blocking off middle seats and ensuring that travellers were socially distanced aboard flights while imposing a mask mandate. The company wasn’t only protecting its employees, it was also showing care toward the public by minimizing risks to travellers. These are all actions that build trust.
