Traffic to Australian news websites fell in the hours following Facebook's news ban and audiences overall have not shifted to new platforms, according to data from web analytics company Chartbeat.

The percentage of Australian traffic from Facebook to news sites dropped from 21 per cent before the ban to less than 2 per cent by midday AEDT yesterday.

As they awoke on Thursday morning, referral traffic climbed as normal but by 6:00am AEDT the increase had faltered before it tumbled rapidly after 7:00am as the outage began to have rolling effect.

. FB banned news the day the Royal Commission into media diversity began. In the opening, Rudd highlighted how Murdoch and Zuckerberg are the same problem. This battle is a ruse - a fake distraction from the Senate hearing. They will get a win-win solution - at our loss .

Let’s see who runs out of money first.

'The Spoiled bratt Syndrome' irritates the many & me..I dreamt about innovative ideas Such as Our Own Version of FB that's Compatible..So When the 'bratt Syndrome'decides to become normal again it would fit & function Normally? It's reason for invention Was for all to benefit

If FB is directing traffic TO news websites as this article states; then why should FB pay? It should be the other way around...

So, what you're really trying to say is, Facebook made up roughly 1/5 of your traffic, and Facebook never once charged you a cost for those referrals, but you want to force them to pay you for sending business to your website?

Not a single critical word from the legacy media across Australia. Why? Because they all wanted to profit off the success of democratised social media. Foreign news sources are critically examining the anti-competition effects of the law, its inequitable negotiation balance.

Not only do I not get Aussie news I also don’t get posts from overseas news/info sites. So much for consumers. Also ABC app needs to address more local news not just a couple of articles.

So I decided to check up on the news on the ABC news app..... which I've been doing for the last couple of years.

Remember, if it’s free, you’re the product.

Those news companies financial dashboards must be seeing a lot of red today, just the tip of the iceberg. You rely on FB FREE service to promote your brand and you want money for traffic and revenue it generates for you for FREE. C'mon, give me a break! IStandWithFacebook

LOLs! Now we see how it really works! Hoocoodanode

My kids have no idea what Facebook is (and they’re old enough to understand when I tell them it’s a data mining business, where the user is the product not the customer, masquerading as a social media service). What future does FB have if their generation isn’t using it? Move on.

Go to news official website/app and delete Facebook. FYI WhatsApp and Instagram are owned by Facebook too.

Stupid to ask tech giants to pay for news link. There are 2 right ways to to: 1. news website could ask readers to pay for it. 2. Government could use antitrust to deal with monopoly

Shows that you need Facebook more than they need you

Unbelievable ' liberal national party doing the bidding for Murdoch, can't get much more sickening, what's happened to our country.

😂😂😂 Who cares? Facebook heading the same way as MySpace. 😂

I'm shocked that people would rely on FB for news. It's a 'go to' for info about friends and relatives. Not the home of Real News, unless you're particulalry into nonsense.

Now remind us who should be paying who money?

😂 imagine the political advantage Labour and the Greens could have been holding and wielding to the benefit ABC funding had they not supported this abomination of a policy!! TBH they would be wise (and supported) if they back peddled fast.

No one could have predicted this would happen. Slow claps and small violins for news sites and the LNP.

Which proves they should be paying Facebook for hosting there news site Facebook pages!

So Facebook drives traffic to news websites for free. The government wants Facebook to pay news websites to drive traffic to their websites for free. Hmmm.

Amazing what a good dose of data & analysis can show. It's a pretty dramatic effect. Based upon the charts in the article, chairmen Rupert & Peter will need to pay FaceBook to host their news links, much like other advertisers do.

.ABCNews really blew it aligning with the U.S. owned Murdoch NewsCorp company on Media Code. Morrison Govt is posting whatever they want to FB now, and no ABC journo is there to fact-check or 'hold them to account.' Ever get the feeling you were all conned?

Aus media: Facebook are allowing its followers to access our news content for free! Facebook: You're right! ok I'll stop doing that. Aus media: Not fair! Facebook wont allow people to access our news content so we can charge Facebook!

It has become mental torture now. We students and graduates have been waiting since march. We are depressed we are really tired now. Is there anyone who can help us? LetUsBackToAus extend485visas We are tired of paying bills from overseas. 1 year is gone and still no plans

ScottMorrisonMP fucked around and found out.

GOOD

Of course they provide a FREE platform for media organizations such as yourselves and also other media organizations to post links which generally lead the user to a 'paywall' And now because uncle Ruperts buisness is failing, thanksfornothingscotty has been told.Get me cash😏

I run a small news and information site. I employ 2 people. Get around 2k hits a day. can I get $? Of course not....only Rupert! The liberal govt is so corrupt and actively ruining small business

This gets more hilarious by the day and I am absolutely living for it. What a complete shitshow from Morrison.

And how much did it affect Facebook traffic? I'm guessing it would be lucky to hit 1.3% People don't exclusively go to Facebook for news, but news providers do use it as a large part of their business model for exposure.

So again why should Facebook pay money to these media companies for sending traffic to their sites? Or is it just a distraction from Scomo's rape scandals?
