Obituary: Texas Roadhouse CEO Kent Taylor, who gave up his pay during the pandemic, was tormented by ringing in his ears from a mild Covid-19 case

After coming down with a mild case of Covid-19 in November, W. Kent Taylor found himself tormented by tinnitus, a ringing in the ears. It persisted and grew so distracting that the founder and chief executive of the restaurant chain Texas Roadhouse Inc. had trouble reading or concentrating. In early March, he met friends at his home in Naples, Fla., and led them on a yacht cruise in the Bahamas. Some of those friends thought he was finally getting better.

On Thursday, March 18, Mr. Taylor died by suicide in his hometown of Louisville, Ky. He was 65 years old and had overcome early flops to build a successful chain of more than 600 casual-dining restaurants, most of which evoke traditional roadside eateries with steaks, music and free peanuts. Friends said that as far as they knew, Mr. Taylor had no history of depression. “Quite the opposite,” said Mark J. Fischer, a friend since childhood. “He was so used to being positive and feeling good.”

JoeNBC Hey guys, can you please think about this a bit? ThePromisedSaviour

There is a really high incidence of suicide in tinnitus sufferers and I believe sufferers tend to be male. It's very common in veterans. For some they can learn to live with it, for others it's so severe it completely destroys the persons quality of life.

JoeNBC 😔

I have it so bad I got it added to my VA dissability rating. One thing I've found is using a TENS unit on the neck can make it go away for 1-2 days. Results vary. This is supported through peer reviewed studies. Most people with tinnitus dont even know this. Most Drs don't either.

Difficult to read what he was going through. RIP

Sad

I have this ringing.... it’s brutal

So sad

JoeNBC Tinnitus came on 2-3 weeks after 1st Moderna shot. It's been loud! Stand next to ocean, or drive car with music, you can hear it. Maybe coincidental or not, seen Neurologist came with paresthesia, and headaches. All right side. MRIs CT, blood work, no one knows. No hearing loss

JoeNBC I had bad tinnitus after a head injury.

You published an editorial claiming patients like Taylor were just manifesting psychosomatic symptoms and it would be a mistake to fund studies of them. This kind of denial of physical illness leads many with complex chronic illnesses to suicide.

Sounds like a boat load of propaganda

JoeNBC That’s so sad. I wonder if he had explored all options for his tinnitus, which I know can be maddening. There are often solutions to tinnitus and other inner-ear disorders that only a specialist like a neurotologist can offer. The average ENT, not so much.

White Noise White Noise White Noise

JoeNBC I have had it for years. Don’t know how, but it’s not pleasant!

The key get-well but most f get vaccinated. Serious time.

JoeNBC Yeah, it's kinda rough....

Sorry to learn this... I’ve had it for a long time and you just get used to it, generally...

Tinnitus is usually associated with hearing loss. I've dealt with it for years.

I have had tinnitus for years. Nothing to do with COVID.

Heartbreaking. He created an awesome restaurant experience.

Covid killed him.

RIP

We are so heartbroken to hear this story. 😢💔 LongCovid is incredibly debilitating and will steal their life away pretty quick - especially when they get no help. Let’s remember to CountLongCovid in our stats and research, immediately. 🙏❤️🖖

No matter how many breakthroughs there are trials, they will pass. Enthusiasm to stay strong is required. I've invested with the wrong guy thinking I have found someone I can trust, but everything was bad, so I was trying to give up until met Mr Redmond577 I appreciate 💯💯

I cried at this news. Covid-19 symptoms have been extreme in many. I know of a person who had to quit their job due to ringing in the ears. It's almost untreatable. Deepest Condolences to his family & friends. NEVERDownPlayCovid19Sympthoms

So that’s one of the symptoms?

An awful story. Those of us who've endured tinnitus for years can sympathize with this fellow. It never goes away and I think we all live in fear of it getting worse.

I strongly object to you calling it a mild Covid case. Maybe his respiratory symptoms were mild, but the ancillary ones were enough to drive him to kill himself. Get your house in order.

So horrible
