Politicians today heard that there isn't a sufficient pool of workers in Ireland

Image: PA Images Image: PA Images MEAT INDUSTRY IRELAND has told TDs and Senators that meat plants will continue to need to fill positions from abroad because there isn’t a sufficient pool of workers in Ireland.

“While our overall preference remains to recruit within the Irish and EEA labour pools, this labour source is not currently available in sufficient numbers and our sector will have a continuing need to fill vacancies from abroad,” he said. The bill being discussed by the committee proposes to update the employment permits system to increase its flexibility and effectiveness.

I believe if that were phrased correctly it would read ' isn't a sufficient pool of CHEAP non unionized workers to exploit in Ireland '

Same is happening in racing...lads roaring for staff, cant get foreigners in to exploit them and the Irish wont work a slave job for peanuts. Tough tits employers!

What about the thousands looking for job seekers allowance?

A lot of people are on here talking about the workers in the meat factories been on low wages. Do they actually know for a fact what wages they’re on

The reason people don’t want to work is because the PUP is easily too available especially to those who didn’t have a full time job

Would it be disgraceful exploitation of workers perhaps? Give workers better conditions and pay.....christ

Millionaires can't get enough people to work long hours for low pay .

Why don’t we look at the social welfare “Jobseeker’s Allowance” she who could be taken off the scratcher

It would be more in line for the DSP to get people trained up for this work. They are not going to be as fast as the foreigners to start but could be incentivised. For every foreign worker given a work permit 4 irish should be taken on. Better than paying people to get boob jobs

......who will work 12 hour shifts for less than minimum wage in a job in which they are highly replaceable and with little to no opportunity for promotion

Government should have shut these places down at the outset ... people want their rashers and sausages on their plates and don't give a toss about the working and living conditions of the workers in these factories!

Low pay and dangerous conditions are not attractive to workers, shocker.

Pay more than minimum wage for an extremely physical job. I worked in kepak from 14 to 18 and still to this day I think it was the hardest job I've ever had

I wonder why people are reluctant to work in an industry that has a blank cheque from government to sicken its workers

Pay more and you might entice people long term unemployed to return to the workforce. Meat factories paying minimum wage can hardly expect a large pool of applicants.
