from face-to-face therapy at its unopened Flatiron studio to a pandemic-induced virtual care option, initially named Real to the People.
Although Safira said the company has garnered employer partnerships that allow some Real users to pay for the service out of their employer-based health or flexible savings accounts, she said Real has no plans to work with insurers. The experience made her realize that today's therapists practice with several different degrees. While helping IDEO study how to build better inpatient mental health facilities, Safira spent most of her time interviewing people who had attempted suicide on their experiences within these institutions. Her work at IDEO also made her realize people often didn't have the language to describe their early mental health symptoms, Safira said, even if many knew the medical definition of conditions like depression and anxiety. To address this, Real seeks to give users a vocabulary to work through their issues and a way to address them earlier.
