The shadow position is particularly attractive because most former shadow advisors go on to hold important roles at Amazon. For example, Amazon's new CEO Andy Jassy, SVP of Amazon India Amit Agarwal, and VP of Amazon Go Dilip Kumar were all former shadows.

Gao's departure is part of a growing list of executive losses at Amazon, which includes roughly 50 VPs in less than two years,.
