Violent protests in Melbourne's CBD may trigger a complete shutdown of all construction work in the city.

The Victorian government is expected to forcibly shutdown all construction sites across the state in response to violent protests outside the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union's Melbourne office today.

The Victorian government is requiring all construction workers to have at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose by September.Australian Council of Trade Unions secretary Sally McManus condemned the violent protest that occurred outside the CFMEU office. "We know from social media networks that the same people who were at the rallies on the weekend were asking people to come to these ones and to dress up in high vis," she said."But the people organising and orchestrating it were people with other motives," she said.

"The Building Industry Group of Unions maintains the view that the construction industry would have voluntarily reached high levels of vaccination without a heavy-handed approach," a BIGU spokesperson said.

What’s next , smashing shop windows and looting !!!!!

It is unfortunate that the construction sector has too high a number of idiots. If you are a decent construction worker, it is time to call out these fools, otherwise you be likely to be tagged with the same community anger.

They should double the lockdown since they're now spreading via protest rally.

So many hurt feelings

😂

Good

Dckheads all of them

The protesters have no respect for others. What of their 'brothers and sisters' who work in health, their hard work and sacrifice?

Ah the CFMEU fucking hard working trades over again

So hang on, the Victorian Opposition agrees to keep the construction industry open safely during lockdown? Like what the Labor gov has been doing all this time, yeah? Glad they're on the same page on this.

Hundreds of thousands of women protest peacefully about being raped, to be threatened with bullets. A small group of men protest violently about where they can eat their Tim tams. And shuts down industry. Tell me again men don't have a problem with violence.

Stand united. 'We swear by the Southern Cross, to stand truly by each other, and fight to defend our rights and liberties'.

And for that you people will suffer longer.

Yep, that’s what happens when a protest is infiltrated by those that only want trouble and hell bent on destruction

I find amusing that they come to a protest meeting about health wearing Hard Hats but not a mask.

SkyNewsAust Necessary financial support package announced to support construction workers during shutdown?

as a Union member myself in a different industry, this kind of action annoys me. We get a hard enought ime from the Liberals/media as it is, and this just fuels their fire.

This is the Victorian Labor Party’s true believers for you. auspol

I’m 100% for freedom of choice, I’d leave those jobs and get work elsewhere, so much opportunity for trades these days…enough trades leave and they mite think twice about mandating a vaccination

No time no respect for this mob

'OFF WITH THEIR HEADS..' -Saddan Andrews

The ban on tea rooms is why the workers were out on the street eating their lunches

Right Wing? Setka not pulling his weight, so they did it for him because he is an Andrews toe sucker. 'Earlier on Monday the CFMEU had demanded eight hours’ pay for six hours’ work as it fought against a ban on tea rooms' construction

stop think act. How hard can it be to think before acting? It’s like setting the house on fire because there’s a spider in the kitchen. cuttingthenosetospitetheface. Whether it’s a lockdown pubcrawl, a religious gathering, violent street protests etc, there’s always a fallout

They need their voices to be heard...one way or another 🤷‍♀️

Wow it's getting so crazy in Ausii

Good. Too many outbreaks at construction sites.

For those of you who are going to say it will overwhelm the health system - turn your scope onto the government's decades of budget cuts for hospitals

You know I think good on them for standing up for what they believe (non violent would have been better). Not anti vaxers - anti dictatorships. People have a right to choose can't mandate; it is all blackmail and extortion. It feels like a very slippery slope.

Wow, it's like sellout Sally McManus, the ABC, SBS, Ch7, Ch9, Ch10 are all saying the same thing in unison. Are they on the payroll too? Fucking oath they are.

That picture is of real CFMEU members with an orderly protest unlike today where the far right extremists caused the trouble.

This 'sCiEnTiFiC' ban on construction workers will galvanise action You just played yourself

Let’s be clear and responsible here, this isn’t a reactionary result to the protests today. There’s been higher and higher transmission happening in construction lately… coupled with 73% of audited sites not complying with all COVID protocols.

Welcome to ground zero with the rest of us

They can have their lunch breaks in the comfort if their own homes now!

I’m sure locking down construction won’t spur on any new protests at all….

You can bet your bottom dollar they get a paid 2 week holiday!

How can you shut down a whole industry for a small group protesting? This country is insane.

Be fascinating to watch cases in a week. This is going to cause huge turbulence, very possible it will cause cases to explode with riots, flagrant breaching of health rules and more protests. Could be the dumbest move ever.

What kind of members do they have? Seen guys punch and kick guys with their back turned but never a dog. There’s a new low.

Won't the shutdown affect the level crossing removal projects that are happening across Melbourne? The reopening of some affected lines will be delayed

Really had it coming. Cant say I have ever seen a worker at a site wearing a mask anywhere but under the chin or in the back pocket. Sick of it. If I repeatedly did this at work I would expect dismissal. Cant they just put their big boy pants on and grow up?

It’s not fair to shut down whole building industry. Small builders should not be included as they don’t have issues with tea rooms. Many families are going to suffer even more as their renovations/new home have to be delayed. It’s all because a bunch of idiots.

No work No pay....

If there was no protest today would the construction sector be shut down for two weeks? Are they all meant to vaccinate in the next two weeks? If they don’t vaccinate does construction stay closed?

Oh well they can eat in their own kitchens now

The Dictator has spoken and at the stroke of a pen has lost his voter base

The BIGU is absolutely right. As soon as you force people into an invasive medical procedure, you must expect backlash. That's just reality. As for McManus, well, what she says sounds itself like a conspiracy theory...

What's happening to the beautiful Victoria!

Our grandfathers fought against these right wing Nazis. What shame these RWNJ bring to Australia.

Hi viz idiots

Not closing just because of the riot today. This too.

Is this on medical advice. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Something about Setka, current union chief is communist Dan Andrews bitch. Members want a change of union leadership that the members see as corrupt. 'Dan Andrews bitch' abcnews Earn your dues Setka

I think it’s safe to assume that many of these individuals smoke and put other toxins in their bodies (which are linked with cancers), but won’t vaccinate against Covid, which has been taken by over 3.35 Billion people. This seems a little hypocritical to me.

The problem is the education of trades is very low but they expect to earn thousands so a sense of entitlement starts to appear. I will not hire any trades that haven't been vaccinated or cant prove they have been vaccinated.

Members asking why Dan Andrews doesnt have mandatory vaccination on politicians. Apparently Roger Cooke, WA Labors Health Minister not vaccinated construction

Bloody Labor.

VIOLENT RIOTS by Right Wing Extremists NOT PROTEST Do better

That'll give Avi 'wife basher' Yemeni more to cry over, along with megaphone girl from Sat' & everyone's comedy favourite, Bunnings Karen. Oh wait, none of them are construction workers. Won't hurt them at all. Suckers. Yemeni set to make yet more money from gullible followers

To make out that this is just about protests would mean to ignore the bigger picture. Let's not forget the 70% non-compliance reported last week and that construction sites have become major transmission locations due to this stubborn non-compliance.

I am a die hard unionist and former delegate but consider builders unionist pussies. Can't work in the rain or without break rooms or vaccinate. Get to over yourselves. Think of the collective not yourselves. Freedom is for all not some.

Sucked in. It’s their own fault. Typical unions. Don’t these construction workers realise that they are all replaceable
