A trade body warns some businesses may be forced to scale back production over costs.

Businesses in the ceramics industry may be forced to scale back or stop production due to the rise in gas prices, a trade body warned.

Natural gas prices are at record highs as economies around the world begin to recover from the Covid crisis. Dr Laura Cohen, from the British Ceramic Confederation based in Stoke-on-Trent, said her members had seen prices double.told BBC Radio Stoke"We've got this triple whammy with this international competitiveness and the high prices are getting them considering scaling back production.

"As prices continue to go up and then the higher pricing extends, the other members are likely to be forced to stop production due to uneconomically high energy costs." She said if there was a national shortfall in gas, ceramic businesses could be "forced off the gas network" and if that was to happen, a "forced quick shutdown" can cause "severe damage to kilns, which might threaten business viability."

Tories don't care.

So we'll have to buy our China from....China?

that's all ironic

Well done thick Leave voters, is there nothing you won't damage with your terrible pointless Brexit nonsense.

Shortage of tiles, plates, cups, etc next. By the time Brexit is 'working' there will be nothing left.

Stoke has the most densely populated area of dense brexidiots. Don't worry, they've all taken back control and are living in sunny uplands 🤣

Given the very strong support for brexit in Stoke and the surrounding area, this may not play well for Conservatives . The issues building today are being tolerated, but patience is wearing thinner.

I wonder what fuel they used to earn the name the potteries

But can they raise the price on a rainy night in Stoke?
