At a major oil and gas conference in Darwin this week, days out from the Glasgow climate talks, governments and gas companies discussed plans to expand the industry. Larrakia elder June Mills fears the promises to offset emissions will be too little, too late.

Inside the industry conference on Wednesday, NT Chief Minister Michael Gunner finished his acknowledgement of country with a promise to be "careful and caring" of Larrakia land.In his keynote address, Mr Gunner spruiked the case for investing in the NT's on- and offshore gas deposits. He defended the government's push for more gas to feed growing global demand and increase Australia's third most valuable export, which he said was expected to be worth $56 billion in 2022.

Santos chief executive Kevin Gallagher said his company had successfully trialled CCS in South Australia's Cooper Basin and planned to use it for the company's massive Barossa project off Darwin. Mr Gallagher was joined on the conference line-up by executives from Empire Energy and Origin Energy, which say they are getting closer to investment decisions on fracking in the Beetaloo Basin.

The rangers' team leader, Steven Dawson, said they had noticed the Top End becoming hotter and drier in recent years.
